I realize that Delessio's Market Fresh Bounty buffet accounts for a disproportionate share of my food intake, and that without it, I would be forced to consume ramen, grilled cheese, scrambled eggs, or one of the other three things I know how to cook, but really-- i'm okay with that.

This is hands-down the best buffet in town, serving only the finest, freshest ingredients to create delectable dishes that all follow the slow food mantra (local, sustainable, organic, and ethical).  I usually have a categorical aversion to any food involving a buffet, but for Delessio I gladly make an exception.  Chew on that, Whole Foods!

Bite bite bite ....... wow..... gone to heaven. I'm talking about DeLessio's mini cupcakes, in particular the PB no J. This is serious stuff. You'd think that a mini cupcake would not be satisfying enough right? That's what I though my first visit and bought 3. After the first bite of PB no J my eye's rolled back because it was so delicious, the perfect combination of chocolate cupcake layered with peanut butter mousse, and topped with a flamed marshmallow puff. delectable and the reason I go to DeLessios, period. And as a note - one cake was enough, the rest I gave away to my friends, to pass on that little bit of heavenly feeling. =)

Have to agree with Amy on the price thing... reminds me of when I went to my first hippy mart (before they became yippy marts... yuppie + hippie) and saw the emaciated individuals trance stepping about the place.  I thought I was in the land of the dead "is this what it's like to be healthy???? on the cusp of death?"  I learned why as soon as I got to the register... they can only afford to eat a meager handful of the hippy goodness less they go broke and die of starvation... the sweet irony...but I digress (minus one star for price gouging on a buzz word... that and Netflix raised me a dollar a month for having Blue Ray... FU Netflix!  I'm updating your review and the stars are dropping!).

ICE MOCHA
Oh... it's Stellar.  You know how most Ice drinks are all ice... this one actually had a beverage!  Only about an 8th of the cup was ice.  Thank You!!  And the taste... my lordy... the taste!!!  Starbucks, Pete's, random shop... in to the hell pits with ya!  This is what an ice mocha is supposed to taste like.  God Bless It!  Now, I did come here for the hot cocoa, but it was too hot out so that will have to wait.

COOKIE
Choc O Chip homes.  Rivers of chocolate run through it, for real.  It's good.

BATHROOM
Yes!  It's clean!  No hook for a jacket, but you there is a basket to toss the goods in to.

ATMO
Got a happy little patio complete with Street Urchin access... so, you know... enjoy, but keep your valuables close at hand.  Inside is nice and there is at least one 4 port outlet for your laptop and iPOD needs (does your iPod battery suck as much as mine does... function over form... my iPod needs to be thrown in a lake).  LOVE the prep area in the back... totally open so you can be a part of the magic.

PARKING
Sucks a$$.  Some free street action around the corner though, and Mote E Cycles might get away with curb action by the bike rack out front of the art store.

Delessio, you are now OVERPRICED!!!!

I am writing this review with extreme sadness in my heart:  This USED to be my favorite lunch hangout, and now I fear I will never dine here again.

Here's the deal:  the hot & cold salad bars, which generally have delicious dishes to choose from, used to be about $8.50-.75 lb.  This is the upper range of what I'm willing to spend on lunch, but I did it because I loved the variety and found the dishes tasty.

But just a few days ago, I walked in and saw that they have suddenly upped the price to $12.50 lb!!!!  They are claiming that this is because they've converted all their food to locally grown and farmed.  Looking around the buffet, the same dishes as always greeted my eyes, except when I tasted my lunch (which rang up at almost $16!!!  I used to pay only about $10-11), it was dried out, overcooked, and told me right off the bat that it'd been sitting around a long time on that buffet.

So, in case my writing's been convoluted and you haven't been able to follow, I'm saying that I just paid a LOT more money for something that tasted far INFERIOR to what I used to get here.

Ugh.

I'm so mad.  And I'm apparently not alone.  I complained about the price hike to the guy who rang me up, and he rolled his eyes and said that they were losing a lot of customers because of it, I wasn't the first to complain by any stretch of the imagination!  I'm glad to know that the rest of the world hasn't lost its mind and decided that it's reasonable to pay much more for the same thing, or as it happens to be, something of lower discernible quality!!!

Delessio, what were you thinking?!!  Do you WANT to go out of business??   Have you NOTICED that there's a recession going on around you, and possibly even a financial depression???

I for one won't be giving Delessio my business anymore.  I felt like I was going to choke on that food for how much it cost!!  It is, in short, ridiculous!!  So, my dear ex-favorite lunch spot, SO LONG AND GOOD LUCK!!!

Mini cupcakes.

Mind-blowing, stomach-snuggling, sweet-tooth-satisfying mini cupcakes.

If you haven't had the extreme pleasure (and honestly, it's an inappropriate sort of pleasure in that really good way) of having one of their mini cupcakes, let me expound the virtues of mini cupcakes over their larger brethren.

Mini cupcakes are about 1" tall with about 1" of frosting on top.  This is the ideal size for eating, as most of the cupcake does not end up on your cheeks and nose rather than in your mouth and eventually tummy.  Additionally, one can take a bite of a mini cupcake (preferably pumpkin spice with vanilla buttercream and caramel drizzle) and get equal parts of both frosting and cake, rather than being forced to take separate bites of each because the cupcake is too big and your mouth is too small.

Also, you don't have to feel bad about eating a mini cupcake because it's MINI, i.e. it has no calories.

... at least that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

delessio has some delicious sandwiches and explosive desserts.  I've had their cuban pork and reuben sandwiches.   For desserts, I have tried their super rich chocolate cakes; raspberry fudge and german chocolate.   We're talking about major food coma whenever we go here for lunch...but then I usually walk around several blocks to wake up.

You can't go wrong with anything with chocolate here.  They have the BEST chocolate cake!!  It is very rich and creamy, and taste like authentic real chocolate that leaves a great aftertaste.  Unlike those from Safeway or other bakeries which you can only taste sugar. Don't underestimate the petite size.. I ordered the smallest Triple Chocolate Mousse cake ($40), and i kid you not, it can serves ~20 people for a post-dinner dessert.  A little tiny slice is all you need to satisfy your chocolate craving.  Rich and delicious..  

I also highly recommend their Strawberry and Chocolate mousse cup pastry. I need to go to the fridge to get a scope of the left over chocolate mousse cake again.. wait, I think I just had that for breakfast too. I mean a post-breakfast dessert.  OM NOM NOM NOM NOM!

I figured the Chocolate Tower Cake from this place would be enough to satisfy any hunger I thought I had.

Glad I'm wrong about that assumption.

This is the place to go when you need all of your senses stimulated at one time! It also helps if you're hungry... food by weight and some of the best Rabanada around. I'm hard pressed to find a reason why one wouldn't want to be here everyday?

$7.89 for a DEElicious fresh roasted turkey sandwich with melted cheese, cranberry relish on crunchy wheat-looking bread.  Awwwwwwwwwyeah.  The sandwich was SO good.  And a nice size at that.

A few weeks ago, I had the salad bar.  My plate added up to about $10 and was pretty good but not nutso.  But I told myself, "Self, you're getting one of those gorgeous sandwiches next time."  So glad I did.  I can't believe for five bucks elsewhere you get a sandwich that's 20% the quality.  I'd rather pony up the extra two bucks and be delighted.

We decided to get our wedding cakes from De Lessio and use them as our centerpieces.  No one has ever tasted a cake like their malted vanilla and it's exciting and fun yet elegant look was exactly what we were looking for.  We met with a cake maker, but decided we were so much happier with these.  They delivered, were friendly and we couldn't have been happier.  The next day people were telling us they wanted more of our wedding cake!  Have a look at our photo.

They also catered my mom's surprise 50th birthday party and Laura helped guide us with what kind of variety and amounts of food we should have.  Everyone loved it!

Best bakery in the city, in my opinion. Rich, decadent cakes and pastries--the tres leches cake is my absolute favorite--and a well-stocked buffet table. They serve macaroni and cheese, barbecued pork, and various types of salads. Don't be fooled though, even under the guise of 'salad,' none of the food is completely healthful, so be prepared to indulge.

Seating is pretty limited, but it's worth it. Friendly staff, and great atmosphere.

I have been going to Delessio for years to grab really tasty food and some of the best pastries in SF.  So, when I got married recently, I knew I would order the Chocolate Tower Cake rather than a standard wedding cake. Everyone at our wedding was talking about the cake, which was a work of art.  I kept saying "Just wait until you taste it.  It's going to rock your world." And it did!

I go here for their lunch buffet after mind numbing, eye drying, wallet raping stationary expeditions at Flax.  I am that jackass who analyses every buffet offering.  If stared at, one could probably see my head value judging the weight to price ratio of their selections.  It's an exercise in futility since I always spend about $11.50 for what I consider a moderate sized plate of food.  To me, Delessio's buffet is the equivalent of turkey on white bread: not bad, not good but relatively healthy.

Anyhow, I am strictly rating Delessio on it's pastry/coffee experience and it will be very quick:

Coffee ::  Do not expect much.  Stick to an Americano.  Hopefully they will pull it properly and the water will thin out the mediocrity.

Dessert :: Sweet Jesus!  Come here for their non-traditional Tres Leches Cake.  The fact that it is covered in charred meringue sounds odd but it works.  If they're slow and feeling generous, you may be able to finagle some sliced, fresh strawberries.  Of course, their mini cupcakes are always a hit.  I like to buy a few dozen of them when going to parties.

Service :: Typically congenial save a strange run-in with someone I assume is a manager or owner.  I came in to buy 2 dozen mini cupcakes for a last minute cocktail party.  I was only allowed to buy their back-up cupcakes from the refrigerator because she didn't want me to clean out her display.  Isn't that the point of selling things?  So instead of giving me the ready to eat cupcakes, I had to buy the cold ones and wait 30 minutes for them to thaw before bringing them to the party.  Just one annoyance out of many visits.

4 Stars :: Sometimes, a place can offer one amazing thing that's worth coming back for and rating highly upon.  This is Delessio and the gringo-ized Tres Leches Cake..  Until they serve me a f*ed up slice, I will never go lower than 4 stars.  Even if I have to buy cold cupcakes here and there.

Go to Delessio and have some gringo cake.  By yourself, if possible, so you can jack it up without inhibition.

My friends were sweet enough to buy me a really nice chocolate raspberry birthday cake here.  It was actually quite good.  However, I had a cupcake from de lessio a few months later that was so bad, I wanted to spit it out.  Unfortunately, it  was an office birthday party, so I had to politely eat the narsty little thing.  With so many great bakeries in the city, I won't be going back.

Aaron, you are the best mother fuckin' barista in California. Someone please give this man a raise. The coffee is amazing and the food's always solid which is a godsend in the shit pit of the Decco Ghetto. Seriously, who says that? I'm so glad they've fired the incompetents who have shuffled through there in the last couple years. Good changes guys, and thanks.

Conscientious labeling for all diets.

Great people.

Fantastic salad options.

Rotating food layout but staples always remain (*mac n cheese*).

Ridiculous hot sandwiches like the Cuban. *fresh drool*

Desserts like Angie Everhart's legs(http://i27.photobucket...). All day. *waterfalls of drool*

Beer, wine, tea, coffee & patio.

Done.

We were in a rush for lunch.  My friend says let's go, I know a good buffet in the area.   I hesitate... is it an Asian buffet?  No, she says.  Its really good, there's salads and stuff.   okay..

We go and it turns out to be Delessio's!  I've been meaning to try this place, just was never in the area or convenient...   It turned out not to be a buffet.  But, I had just exercised, I'm pregnant, and I just got paid, so I went to town and loaded my plate full of mac & Cheese, ham and cheese frittata, thai chicken, turkey lasagna, roasted zuchini and eggplant, barbeque potatoes, and a slice of bread.   Could there have been more carbs?   They charge you by weight, and I think my plate was about $15.   that plus we finished with their fresh fruit bread pudding.... yum yum....   I need to go back for their tres leche cake.  it is my favorite, of all favorites...   So will definitely go back.

Amazing brunch buffet.  And its a classy pay-per-ounce buffet, not a fat person's all you can eat buffet.  And the desserts are beyond divine.  I just wish Delessio was open late.

I went back on One's opinion that I hold high in matters of food. Mine.
It was after lunch, perhaps 2? I was so excited. I was back. At the new home of my taste buds, they could not WAIT for a mini cupcake, a pile of hot food from the iron skillets and most of all, the banana meringue tart.

Snatched a plate, ran over to the food bar and my heart sunk a little. Nothing really there. Potatoes, more potatoes, remnants and potatoes. Well, that's what I get for coming at 2, perhaps. No matter, I came for the dessert. The "real food" is simply my foil.

Dessert. Banana Tart please. Ooh. Oh no. WHAT did you do to my tart?? Not at all what I had that first, glorious day. No, this day's was soggy crust, NO peanuts, NO ganache!! where did my little piece of perfection go??

Determined not to let this experience be the last word, my Dear Mother has since gone back again, no wanting to let this be the end. Bad news was afoot. Another go at the tart, this "banana" was pear! and not nicely cut up pear pieces. No. It had seeds, it was essentially halved and put in the soggy crust. Only the meringue was familiar. She arrived at lunch time and was met with the same fate as I, nothing much but spuds.

Delessio! In the words of the chic in "Atonement" - Come back to me!

Roasted turkey and cranberry panini.... mmm-mmm-mmm!!!

I had lunch at this charming Italian bakery.  It's a narrow restaurant, brightly decorated in red and black, with an eye-catching salad bar set up in the center, an amazing bakery case with irresistable, mouth-watering pastries and towering cakes and a very appetizing sandwich display.

It's a little cramped, not a lot of tables, but service is efficient and super-friendly.  We sat on the patio until it got a little too windy.

My panini was delicious - grilled bread, nice and crispy, yummy flavors of cheese, cranberry and turkey.  It's the "tear-your-mouth-up" kind of bread, but not to the extreme and any inner mouth injuries are well worth it.  The bakery smells delicious and the flavors will not disappoint.

OK, it all begins here.

This is my first Yelp review. And this place is often the first thing I do in the morning, well the second. They have anything your tongue desires, well the second thing. Really, for a gourmet by-the-pound hot buffet / gourmet salad bar, there is nothing else like it in San Francisco. They also do fresh made sandwiches, most done in a hot panni style, plan a little extra time to heat that baby up. Mornings at Delisso bring on great coffee and some of the best sweets in the city, they not only look good here, they also taste good. The cakes are boderline awesome, once again they look good, but taste even better. Staff is always sweet, like their treats, and make you feel like a guest they have invited over for dinner. The Hawaiian rock-star pastry chef is pretty much bad-ass.

Get there and check it out. A true San Francisco treasure.
Wow, I can't wait to write another review. My coat is off, the pants are next.

I run into DeLessio's for the buffet on my lunch break. I have dietary restrictions so there aren't a lot of places I can just grab and go but this place has fabulous food and so many options!

I love their Polenta with tomato jam, the grilled chicken  options are always nice and there's usually some sort of grain salad on the table.

I pass on the dessert but they look just great.

The staff is very friendly.

I have been known to go out of my way for one thing - their Mac and Cheese.  OM Fing G  Multiple cheeses + a crunchy top.  

They have two "bars" where you help yourself.  One is a salad bar with the usual stuff and very unusual stuff.  The other bar has savories.  The two things which I remember vividly are the Chicken Annabelle, and the roasted winter vegetables . . .and of course the Mac and Cheese.

The desserts are wonderful - you must have at least 3 of their mini cupcakes so you can get a nice tasting - we've had them at many a party and everyone loves them.

Good wine by the glass too.

The only drawback to Delessio . . .the seating BLOWS !   They've done what they can with their space, there are as many tables as can be, but its cramped and not comfy.   There is outside seating but again, not enough of it and often you share your table with others.  

But damn  . . .that Mac and Cheese . . . . worth any discomfort.

Take a spin over to the bathrooms and you get to walk thru the kitchen which is fun.  Lots of bakers and cooks scurrying about.

I also like Bobbie the occasionally crabby, but always totally on top of things, manager who keeps things running smoothly.

But I'm concerned about the Yelper who got horrible food poisoning.  I hope this was just a random thing and not that they are careless.

Mac and Cheese . . .   I think its time to make a run for some, and a few mini cupcakes.  yeah baby!

well, they're less than a block from where i park the work car, and they sell peet's coffee. good enough for me. their bread pudding is a solid "bad day at work" dessert.

Stopped by for dessert after checking out the Frida Kahlo exhibit at the SF MoMa.  I was looking forward to trying the choco-carrot cake (especially because I was told there were no walnuts in the cake - I take no chances at the possibility of having an anaphylactic reaction!), but to my dismay I would have had to buy the entire cake...no serving slices available.  Oh poop.

So my future sis-in-law talked me into trying the chocolate strawberry ganache tart and we were blown away.  I could only get 3 bites in before I was overwhelmed with the Grand Marnier taste infused in the chocolate.  On the way out I bought 4 mini-cupcakes for Mr. B, and he was very happy.  Not saying they were the best cupcakes ever, but they were creative.  The orange vanilla creme one was awesome.  

The buffet looks promising, so if I happened to be shopping at Flax next door...I might just step in to try some of their dishes.

We came to Delessio for their hot food buffet, but came out in love with their baked goods.  My sister had wanted to eat here for a while now and so it was with some excitement that we made our way down Market and into the comfortably snug Delessio.

Once you enter, you're greeted with the irresistible scent of freshly made food- on our visit, the buffet table featured mac n' cheese, Cuban roast pork, rotisserie chicken, a potato casserole, Sichuan eggplant, and a few other dishes.  The mac n' cheese was sublimely cheesy and it was my favorite dish here.  The roast pork was tasty, though a little dry, while the chicken was decent- I wish the skin had been a little crisper.    

You can get pretty carried away with how much food you're piling onto your plate, especially when they put down a new dish of mac n' cheese, so try to control your portions.  My sister and I ended up with a little over a pound of food each, which was more than plenty for the two of us for lunch.

We didn't have much room for dessert, but we had to check out their cakes and pastries anyway.  They had the most darling mini cupcakes- I got the red velvet, peanut butter, and orange creamiscle flavors.  I also couldn't resist getting some of their cookies, as well as a slice of their cake du jour- a well-spiced carrot cake with a layer of ginger cream cheese in the center.  The cupcakes were delicious- the cake was a little dry, but I did like their frosting, which was very smooth, not too sweet, and definitely not too buttery.  The cookies were okay- I liked the lemon one best.  The cake was good, but the ginger cream cheese had a little too much ginger in it.

Overall, Delessio made some wonderful food.  The items at the self-serve buffet were of a really good quality and some of the panini sandwiches (Cuban pork!) sound really good.  And they make some damn good mini-cupcakes!  I'd come back to try more of their cakes- the lemon cheesecake looks delish!

We got our Commitment Ceremony cake there and everyone loved it. So chock full of dark chocolate. I believe it was a flourless chocolate cake with sour cream chocolate frosting Yum! Not too expensive either.

omg, the tres leches cake is so good!!  so moist w/ a hint of rum.  i also love the merengue exterior which balanced out the sweetness of the cake.  yum!

First the good:

If you want sweets or baked items, you cannot lose hear. The stuff is awesome. They also have a"by the pound" buffet which looks REALLY good. Atmosphere is great and so are the people. Can be hard to find a place to sit during busy lunch time.

The Bad:
I just don't think their sandwiches are that great. Always a not so great  combination of ingredients.
Go with the paninis or something, the premade/prewrapped sandwiches leave something to be desired....

I want to love this place, because in theory I do.  In actuality, I despise it because:

1) I got the most rotten food poisoning of my entire life from their (dare I say overpriced) salad bar. To this day when I think about DeLessio my stomach churns & knots.  Over the course of the extremely violent cleansing of my entire digestive tract I regretted ever stepping foot inside.

2) The three times I ate there multiple items were mislabeled "Gluten-Free"  which I pointed out to the workers and they would switch out the food labels. But, really? Polenta with HUGE CHUNKS OF BREAD cooked into it HAS wheat in it.

If you have bleeding ankles as a result of trying to ambitiously walk home in a not-quite-broken-in pair of Doc Martens and you have no moleskin and no cabs will stop for you and you're about to go apeshit 'cause your feet are practically severed from your body, this is the place that will go out of their way to find you a friggin' Band Aid so you can actually manage to limp the 4 blocks home and tend to your wounds...

I started getting my Depth Charges from this place in the morning as a result of their employees' awesomeness.

PS: I have also been here right before they close and have offered me free, almost-a-day-old pastries/cake.  It looked hella yummy, but I didn't take the freebies cause I'm fat like that, and don't wanna get fatter!

Coworker & I used to Garmin, and after 3 u-turns, we ended up here. Not where we intended but i'm glad that we did! We both ate off of the buffet and had great bbq chicken, amazing sauted veggies, and some cheesy thing. I wish I saved room for desserts because I was drooling over all the pastries up front! ..... this is such a great place for a nonchalant meal for a sunday afternoon.  my gf and i usually come here around 1pm with the sunday newspaper in hand and enjoy ourselves. the food is very tasty and if they are short on a dish, you can ask them if they have anymore which my gf did and we were rewarded BBQ Brisket!~  the price is pretty moderate but you pay for what you eat which is cool.  

it is set up like a buffet, you get a plate and top it with the food there.  once you have accumulated enough food you weigh it at the cashier and pay.  you can also grab sandwiches and other delights.  i give it 4 stars for being the perfect place to relax and enjoy.  i guess it would be 5stars if they were open at night...

Great food for a great price!

Had lunch with the girlfriend here and I was a bit hesitant at first. I never thought a cafeteria style bakery would be so good.

I ordered the chicken which was a bit bland and dry, but the mac n cheese was very good.  The girlfriend got some type of braised beef in a coconut peanut sauce which was really good.

For dessert she had a mint cookie which she savored in small bites until the very end and I had chocolate with macadamia nuts.

The food was great and price was decent.  I love a place where you can choose the portion of what you want and offers a great variety of food.

The sign that asks me to clean up after myself to help keep the place looking nice sticks in my craw a bit after paying $13 for a sandwich and a soda.

And the Cuban sandwich I had at Arlequin's was better, I have to say.

First the bad catering job at my office party, now this.  Quo vadis, DeLessio?

This place is close to my house and I heard about their mini cupcakes so I thought I'd try to order a dozen for my friend's birthday.  I called the customer service number for the market/gough location they had on their website at 10am.  The recording said their customer service hours were until 4pm and they would return my call promptly.  4:00pm and no call-back.  So I called them again but of course they didn't pick up.  I got a call at 5:15pm but by then I just swung by the shop to try out the cupcakes.  

I had the S'mores and the Red Velvet.  Both were very dry but the frosting was good.  Creative in their flavor combination.  They didn't taste fresh though.  I asked about ordering a dozen and they said they always had some frozen in the back so I could pick some up anytime.  Well, that explained why they were so dry and had some weird flavors...the frosting and cake will absorb odors of foods around them.  I don't recommend this place.  They had a bunch of food out  around 4:30pm that looked crusted over/congealed and not fresh looking like it was still out from lunch.  And the lighting is dim and the tables are sticky.  The guy at the register was very nice and accomodating though.  This is more of a cafe and I scoff at their website motto "a veritable feast for your senses."  Pshaw!  

I ended up driving all the way to the Marina for Kara's cupcakes.  So good.  Fresh and delicious.  The fleur de sel (chocolate cupcake with thick chocolate frosting and a sprinkling of salt and filled with gooey caramel) was phenomenal and *almost* worth the drive and parking hassle.  That Takes the Cake was also highly recommended but they opened later (11am).

When I first moved to SF, I lived on Pearl Street and I would stop here all the time for coffee on the way to my horrible job.

Now that I'm more established, and even though I've moved out of the neighborhood, I still come back.  

Great coffee and sweets.  Love the mini cupcakes even if a bit pricey.  Sometimes you don't *want* a whole cupcake right after zazen at the zen center on Saturday mornings, right?

But somehow you *DO* have room for a gourmet egg mcmuffin that you have to pry out of a big skillet in which it was baked with 7 of its brothers.  And you *DO* want some frittata, and egg scramble, and breakfast potatoes, and some heavenly concoction of an egg baked over greens in a skillet with cheese all over it.  

And you *DEFINITELY* want BANANA BREAD FRENCH TOAST.

I think the price for this hot breakfast bar is expensive, but not prohibitive and actually....?  Totally worth it, y'all.  This is what I want my breakfast to be when I'm at home but I haven't had time or energy to create it for myself.

While Delessio's is often busy (for good reason) the service is always fast. whether you're looking for a quick fix (double latte + vanilla creme brioche) or you wanna eat in/ take away a proper meal (fresh hot /cold food bars + yummy panini) ...your search is over.

plus of course they are the perfect place to turn to when you need dessert for a special party (crazy insane chocolate cake) or for your special self (mini cupcakes). on many levels, delessio's is divinely delish.
