OMFG! I work in the area and am always disappointed with the quality of food and prices. Places think that they can have crappy food and charge a ton, NOT Focaccia! I went there for lunch for the first time yesterday and I couldn't believe it. I got a sandwich, bag of chips and a cookie for $9.75! Which is on the cheaper side for the area. And the food? Couldn't taste better - IT. WAS. DELICIOUS. I got black forest ham on focaccia bread, with lettuce, cucumber, swiss cheese and balsamic dressing, then lightly heated up, just melting the cheese...lunch heaven.

Decent size, fresh salad for $6!

Sheena J. and I have weekly lunch dates at Focaccia, so yummy and it can be as healthy as you want it to be, of course I always ask for extra dressing, so there goes my "healthy" lunch....

The ladies are very friendly. Wayyyy too busy between 12 and 1, so we always go after 1 so the wait is about 2 to 3 minutes, sometimes none.

Oh Focaccia, how I miss ya! When I used to work right around the corner, I would escape my job from hell by diving face first into your delicious salads and lovely bread and cookies.

Now that I work a few blocks further away, I generally don't make the trip any more. Today, however, with the weather making it near impossible to consider anything other than a long, long lunch, my co-workers and I made the trek, and my salad was as good as ever, at about half the price of something from Mixt Greens, where they skimp on the toppings.

I'm pleased to report that, if anything, the quality of the food has gone up since I last got take-out from you. I might just have to make the trip more often.

I dunno how happy a toasted veggie sandwich can make you...but it sure makes me giddy and insanely happy when it comes from this place.
They don't skimp ya on tastiness and everyone working there is super sweet even tho there are a million trillion peeps trying to get their grub on during their 30 min. lunch.
I agree that the prices kinda hurt a bit sometimes...but it's worth it! I'm always happy with my purchase...
knowing that their food has no preservatives and is made of "good stuff"...you are paying for quality.

I'm giving it 5 stars just for the CHOCOLATE CHIP MUFFINS with the crispy tops that remind me of NY C!!!  They are the perfect size - not super HUGE just perfect.  With the perfect amount of chocolate chips.

There are some days that they don't have them, and then I am sad.  But then the next day they'll have them again, and I am happy!!  If only everything could make me this happy...

If I could marry a muffin, I would.

Additional notes:
- They will custom make a salad for you!  But the lunch-time crowds should be avoided.
- The guy at the hot foods place in the back is kind of grouchy, so be quick with your order!  He is probably a great chef.
- Lots of fresh options for lunch if you don't want to wait - pre-made salads, wraps (with herbed wraps which are delicious), sandwiches and plenty of drinks.

They used to have chocolate pudding, which I miss, and they used to have pre-made bagels with cream cheese and lox in the morning which they no longer have, and I miss those too.

It is pricey to go every day like I do (they are super close, and I can't take lunch!), but I don't go food shopping.  So I pretend to myself that it evens out, and I actually eat slightly healthy.

One of my favorite lunch spots... great place to grab a sandwich, salad or hot food.  If I'm able to leave for lunch around 11:30 I'll go here otherwise it gets crazy crowded and I don't like crowded. The prices are pretty good for the financial district. The sandwiches are what I go here for. They have so many meats, cheeses and breads to choose from that you could make so many combinations.  I still gravitate to my fave though... turkey, swiss, avocado on focaccia.  The quality is really great... if you want a crappy sandwich go next door to subway... they'll give you lots of bread and veggies with a hint of meat and cheese.

Just to let you know I don't have burgers everyday. It is just that I am a little lazy when it comes to updating reviews.

So,I had the opportunity to try the burger here and I must say it was
made the way I like it ( well done) and tasted good. You have several choices of bread selections.I decide on a nice baked wheat bun.The burger was topped with cheese and the ingredients:tomato, onion and lettuce were to the side in the box next to the burger. All looked fresh and delicious.

The burger overall was not large, not overwhelming, but a decent size.Heck, who am I kidding I prefer the overwhelming and unusual burgers. So,basically the patty was just the right size and didn't over lap my bun.

The fries were thin, kind of crispy and ok tasting.I do like thicker fries if i had a choice.

I give 4 stars for the burger, but overall experience with the other food I have tasted here I'll give this place still a 5.

I think Focaccia has some great fresh and healthy selections as well as hot comfort foods, but I feel like it's just too pricy.  One thing I got recently was a vegetarian wrap.  I can't remember what was in it other than eggplant.  I thought it was very good, but come on, $7 for an herbed-tortilla with vegetables in it?   Even the "side dishes" are like $5 each.  I'm like, are you serious?  So I am supposed to get one of these in addition to what, my $8 main course?  Seems kind of absurd.  I want to give them two stars, but they deserve three because the food really is pretty good...high quality....

The lines on the salad and sandwich side gets really long. So I hop over next door to the less frequented grill side, and I always order the 2 sliders with fries off the special menu. You can mix and match the beef and chicken sliders. As simple as the item seems, the slider is flavorful and the buns have the perfect density. The fries really take the entire order to the next echelon. If you love skinny crispy fries, you will love Focaccia Grill's fries. They are so good that I have to devour them with a fork by maximizing the number of fries I impale and swoop in with a single bite. I pretty much finish the fries in 5 fork bites.

WTF happened here?  I stopped in today to get a salad and not only is the lettuce wilted, but the balsamic vinaigrette dressing is totally bland.  I had to pour on the salt and pepper just to create a semblance of a salad.

Oh, and while the ladies who work the salad counter are very nice, the asian woman who handles the cash register and makes the coffee drinks is amazingly RUDE.   Man, talk about being curt.

Jeeze.

I've been buying from them for more than 12 years.  I LOVE their "breads."  They used to have these yummy lox & bagels available in the morning but no longer.  They also offer a 3 course hot meal ranging from steaks to fish to roast lamb, pork, and always freshly roasted chicken and your selection of 2 sides.  You can have the saladmaker make you a salad to order, same with sandwiches.  And their counter next door makes breakfasts all day.  I have had some problems occasionally with the inability of some of the employees lacking the ability to think and problem solve (if the sandwich guy runs out of lettuce 10 mins before closing, he doesn't think "hey, I can walk 10 steps to the salad section and get lettuce from them," they just tell you the whole place has no lettuce--or whatever.  If you're lucky enough to intercept the owner (great guy, hands-on and helpful), he'll get what you want but it is disappointing that his employees aren't more resourceful or have any initiative.  My one big complaint is that they don't start serving lunch ujntil 11:30 and then close at around 3pm so if you had to work through that window, you go hungry.

Pass the salt please! And pepper! And balsamic vinegar! Or something!

The good: super friendly employee at the rotisserie, he even took care to make sure I got chicken that was hot out of the oven rather than lukewarm from the butcher block. And the chicken was juicy and tender. $7.95 for 1/2 chicken and two sides is a good value in my opinion.

The bad: There was kitchen twine stuck to the chicken, a big piece along with little bits that I couldn't chew through which is how I realized it was twine. And the broccoli and zucchini had absolutely zero seasoning. Nothing. No pepper, no salt, no olive oil, no flavor at all. What a waste of about 12 oz of veggies. Now if I had taken this home I would have been able to season it myself... but home is an hour away!

Love the food here! They have the best salad dressings and the salad makings are amazing.  I don't mind the lines ~ I work in the financial district so I expect it at lunch. I do, however, mind being treated like I am the lowest form of life just for ordering my lunch.  Honestly, the women behind the salad bar are so incredibly rude. Occassionally they will crack a smile for a cute suit, but women are treated like ugly stepchildren. They seem highly irritated if you deviate from the unwritten ordering protocol that only they know. I always love my salad and I always hate aquiring it!  It's a real quagmire!

A pre-emptive apology for the excessive use of ( )( )( )( )'s with way too many thoughts in them.

Imagine the Soup place from Seinfeld, but on a much larger scale.

This place can be intimidating for newcomers.  There are multiple lines all over the place, tons of people, and tons of employees taking orders.  You don't know where to go, you're not sure what line you need to get into (one for hot food, one for sandwiches, one for salads, one for paying...).

But don't let the fact that the hot food guy will get annoyed with you if you aren't ready or don't know the system scare you away (you can order ala carte meat like filet of fish, half chicken, etc. or you can get it with two sides, I recommend good ole fashioned Macaroni and Cheese, the grilled asparagus is also an excellent choice $7.95 I believe).

The food is good and very consistent.  And although always packed, this place runs like a well oiled nude bay to breaker runner.  It is much like that credit card commercial though, where if you get someone in front of you that doesn't know the system, the whole thing comes to a grinding halt and you find yourself wanting to "help" them along.

4 stars given because I haven't tried everything yet and because the "hot" food isn't always very hot and may take a quick minute in the nuker and due to the fact that it's only take away, no table.

One of my fav. lunch places in the financial district. whether you're in the mood for made to order salads, sandwiches or grill (rotisserie chix, stew, etc..) they've got it all. Plus, they're prices are great esp. for the financial district. A bit confusing around lunch time because of the long lines but i would say def. worth the wait.

I'm a proud member of WAKA, the World Adult Kickball Association, and my team (holla, Kick In A Box!) plays on Wednesday nights, which means every Thursday morning I wake up saying "Holy Hangover, Batman!" This is due to the fact that my roommate and I typically kill a fifth of vodka (mixed with Gatorade = Faderade!) every single game. And then comes the flip cup at the bar following... Aggressive, I know.  Thankfully, there are Focaccia's breakfast burritos to help me stave off death the next morning. I honestly wouldn't be able to make it through the day without the sustenance that the sausage, egg, cheese, potato, salsa, and ungodly amounts of Sriracha provides me. Incidently, my roommate always feels way worse than I do on Thursday mornings- I maintain its because she doesn't have a breakfast burrito place next to her office building. Sorry, Mollie.

I've been here a few times for lunch because it's so close to my office and I've only ever had the salads so I can't comment on the rest of the food.

I always get one of the made to order salads and they are always yummy! Although you really can't mess up a salad.  Anyways, the ingredients are always fresh and they don't skim on anything.  I think the salad prices are super reasonable for the FD (financial district).

We went around 12:30 and the place was SUPER packed but everyone seemed to know what line they needed to be in (how I'm not sure) and all of the lines went super fast.  I was in and out in less than 10 minutes and it would have been faster had I not taken so long to figure out what I wanted.

I did try one of their oatmeal cookies today and I have to say it was super, super yummy.

Good quality salad ingredients, speedy friendly service and you can use your debit/credit card which is always a plus!!

Kind of like the rest of the high end delis. Fresh ingredients, fast staff, and all the usual sides.

Came for lunch, and had a turkey sandwich which was really good. While I enjoyed how they controlled the lunch crowd and made sure people got their food quickly, I thought the food was just ok.

Wasn't jumping out of my seat with my sandwich, but it was solid enough that I'll be back.

Sidenote: When I went they didn't have any tomatoes, and I'm glad they were on top of the whole salmonella outbreak.

Focaccia's pretty reliable, and that means a lot coming from a former receptionist who used them to cater all the client meetings for over a year.

Foccacia = Mama's cooking. Without hesitation I recommend Focaccia for the best homecooked food. Without them I would starve during lunchtiime. Yes, they make the best warmed sandwiches, and their deli case is stocked with handmade chicken and tuna salad as well as yummy non-fat parfaits.  Their warm counter is the bomb tho' the creme de la creme of comfort food, there resides the short ribs, brazenly cooked in an exotic sauce, the pork is spicy and tender, the mashed potatoes are whipped with creamy butter AND Marscapone, the zucchini is crisp, and delish, the fish is tender and sauteed to perfection, and the chicken is delictable!

Without Focaccia I would surely starve.

I eat here at least three times a week, well...because it is really just around the corner from my work, but truly the food is absolutely freakin' delicious. This joint is the perfect replacement for mom's cooking (mom was a gourmet cook!). When I need the calories, the comfort and the smiles, I come to Focaccia.

The only complaint I would say is that the lines are long and labyrinthine. At the lunchtime crunch no one knows what freakin' line they are in.  Make sure you get there at 11:30 or you will be bitchin and moaning at the long queue.  Be sure to remember, the coffee sucks. but everything else is absolutely exquisite!

Brava!

Food: 4 stars
Service: 2 stars
Prices: 2 stars

This place would actually make a better martini bar than lunch place.  Focaccia's (at least at lunch time) is filled with stereotypical Financial District inhabitants - young, attractive professional women in skirts and heels, up-and-coming well groomed men with sharp jaw lines and blazers on over their well pressed button downs.  Really.

The place is small and as other reviewers have said - there are lines snaking all over.  Everyone is checking out everyone else.  If they served drinks I think it could easily be the next big hook up bar.

Now add to the strange professional/sexual tension 4 long, fast-moving lines, 3 hurried checkout people, one constantly pissed off sandwich guy (you know who you are), and lots of good food (salads, sandwiches, hot meats).

The food is great. I have had a taste of just about everything they offer and have not been disappointed.  However, be prepared to bring your financial district paycheck with you - the food is pricey, even for SF.

Sadly the service here sucks.  How hard is it to screw up food customer service?  I live in the Mission where I don't even speak the same language as the people serving me and they still do a better job than Focaccia.  The service here is hurried and worse - rude all too often.  Even my job doesn't stress me out as much as a visit to this place.

The food and convenience bring me back from time to time, but this is not at the top of my lunch spots in the financial district.

Best.  Eggplant.  Sandwich.  EVER!

The ingredients:
Wheat bread
Eggplant
Goat cheese
Roasted red pepper
(....Heat....)
Lettuce
Tomato
....maybe avocado if I'm feeling gluttonous.

Order a small salad in a large container.  They end up giving you a little extra ingredients and you still have room to give the greens a little toss.  AND it's still cheaper than Mix't Greens!

Come before 11:30 to avoid the lines and a headache; they need a better contraflow system in place.  And please people...if you need to order sandwiches for your 5 co-workers, atleast have the courtesy to order online beforehand.

Update! So I've been back twice and finally managed to procure chicken for my salad. Awesomeness. I decided to go with the spring mix, feta, olives, cucumber, chicken, red peppers with balsamic on croutons. Very delicious! I understand why everyone likes it so much now.

Just don't go here for the customer service. The guy who runs the rotisserie chicken deal is pretty sweet, but other than that their staff tends to shout to the next person in line behind you even when you aren't halfway done with what you're saying. Hence the reason they don't get that fifth star.

NOTE: YOU NEED TO GET THERE EARLY. By 1pm, everything good is cleaned out. So take your salad back to the office or walk to the park and savor it later.

SECOND NOTE: READ THE FINE PRINT FOR SALADS. My boss learned this the hard way. Each additional topping after 3 toppings is 75cents. Meat is more. Croutons and dressing are no charge. It adds up quick. My salad above in a size small was only 6.95 because I'm good like that! Haha or more like I counted in my head. You don't need to spend $10-12 to have a great salad!
.................................................. .................................................. ..........................

I must say, I think I'm having the worst luck with places running out of the one thing I want to eat! They loose a star for this, but it's most likely only going to be temporary.

All I know is my boss has been eating here non-stop for the last week, so I decided to give it a whirl. There was somewhat of a line, but is nowhere near as bad as it appeared. Most everyone was going for the salad, although I am very tempted to go back for a rotissiere chicken meal.....

I was dying for a chicken caeser, as I have been craving this salad unendingly over the last five months, but when I went to order they were "out of chicken." Yet, somehow, I can hardly fathom this since ten feet away there was another worker pulling a half dozen roasted, juicy chickens out of the oven. I mean, the fact is quite a few people were asking for it and I would think they would go about procurring the chicken just to keep people happy. So I ended up getting chicken salad sandwich stuff to go with my caeser. It was interesting, though not horrible, I can't say the pickles and onions went well with the dressing. So maybe next time guys, eh?

Yes, a 2...and that is kind.

The food = amazing.

The people = horrid.

I work right by this place so it is convenient and when my company gets food catered from here it is delicious.  But if you try to pick something up there for lunch, the financial district crowd is overwhelming and the line is out the door.  Because of this, their noses are in the air when it comes to customer service.

My reasoning:

Me: "I'd like to order a salad, please."

Confused Lady: "We open at 11am!"

Me: "It's ten after."

Stupid Lady: " We're not open yet."

Me: "Then why does it say 'open' and the doors are propped open and everyone is just standing around?" (imagine a confused voice and not a bitchy one)

Rude Lady: walks away...

Me: "I will wait then."

Weird guy: "Might be a while." (laughing like an ass)

Me: boycotts Focaccia for life.

Seriously, top 3 for worst service ever, and I toned down the attitude.

ate here on monday and a woman with nude hose walked right up to the cashier to check out, bypassing the line that wrapped around the bakery. so not only do the lines move fast, but there could be a brawl at any moment.  how fun!

the salads are dead on.  it's like mixt greens but you can order a normal sized portion and not take out a 2nd mortgage to eat there. i wish they had butter lettuce but whatever. the free focaccia bread in the baskets delish.

I love this place.  I've been here several times before and went back today for some salad.

They have an assorted selection of hot dishes, build your own salad, premade items, soup and baked goods.  Whenever I come here I am always pleased.

Salad:  You can choose between several options for greens (romaine, lettuce, mixed greens, baby spinach).  The prices are reasonable ($4.45 for a small) and initially includes up to 3 toppings.  Their toppings range from tomatoes, cucumber, mushrooms, onions, artichokes, pickles, etc.  They have other add-ins such as chicken, but there is an additional cost.  You can either have them mix your salad with dressing, or you can request the dressing on the side.  At the end of the day, it's totally worth it.  Their small salad will last me about 2-3 meals and stays fresh in it's air-tight container.  They also offer free focaccia bread as an accompaniment.

Another note:  This place can get quite crowded, so just fall in line and be patient.  If you are pressed for time, just grab a prepackaged item and take it to the register.

Lunch: 3.5 stars
Breakfast: 1 star

For lunch, this place is quite good. Especially if you can go off-hours.  But for breakfast, forget it!

We have ordered breakfast from here twice now, and they have managed to royally screw up the orders both times.  According to the menus on the website, we were supposed to get scones in our breakfast boxes -- no scones either time.  The first time I had ordered a turkey and cheese croissant, but discovered they had made a breakfast burrito instead.  The second time, we all ordered the granola & yogurt...and some ding-done gave us all little boxes of cereal with yogurt.  (So I ended up with Fruit Loops and strawberry yogurt!)

We have been offically told never to order breakfast from this place again by our manager, it was that much of a screw-up.

That said, their lunch is quite good: especially the paninis and salads.  The line is always long though and it feels like a zoo if you go inthe middle of the rush lunch crunch.

They clearly have some management issues and need to train their employees better.

seriously, would a smile kill you?  my god, the service is (if u can even call it service) phuking horrid!  the only reason its even get two star is for the food only.

if you really want to experience customer abuse, definitely try this place, you don't know what assult to your self esteem means without heading here.  make sure u pay a visit to the salad ladies who will give you the death stare should you even attempt to make eye contact.

the pros:  the basmati rice is really really good.  the ceasar dressing and their complementary focaccia bread.

the cons: everything else

i hate white meat chicken, its hella dry which is why i always ask for dark meat. they gave me the breast. it wasn't touched.  (i believe they owe me $5.95 for food i didn't ask for and food i didn't eat cuz it wasn't what i asked for).

Faccacia Grill (adjacent to the always crowded cafe) is awesome. Fresh grilled meats and always fresh veggies/salads. I eat here at least 3 days a week.

I heart Focaccia for their fresh salads and delicious sandwiches. I take away two stars because the mean lady behind the salad counter made me cry. All I was doing was standing there trying to decide what the next ingredients in my salad would be. Hmmmm...should it be kidney beans or corn? Or both? Broccoli or tomatoes? Cucumbers or carrots? Maybe all?

Now, I can see how that can be annoying. But, I'm a super duper fast thinker. All that thinking was like 2 seconds. Seriously. I look at the salad lady expecting a nice warm smile, but instead see this flash of annoyance with a quick eye roll as she waits with hand on hip. I can hear her thoughts..."Estupida nina. Tomar una decision! Estupida! Estupida! Estupida!" So, I just blurt out anything. I don't even remember what I ordered. At that point, I'm scared shitless. She tosses my salad and hands it to me grudgingly. As soon as I have my salad in my hands she turns away annoyed.

I walk to the cashier with head low. I hand my money to the cashier...ooh, look at that, yummy looking bread. I take a piece.

My final thoughts "I'm crying to Yelp!" heh.

Even when i'm in my worst of moods, there is nothing bad i can say about Focaccia.  Enormous sandwiches of pure delight, enormous roasted vegtable salads. Mix up some ketchup and mayo on those veggies and they taste just like peanuts! YUM!

honestly, the best deli sandwiches i've had in the financial district where there is a very good selection of meats, veggies and condiments.

you can have them cold or toasted in the large oven.

i haven't tried the hot food items or the salads yet, but i'm sure i'll be back for them soon.

the best part of coming here is that i get to see my honey and commit random acts of PDA in the FiDi.

yes, we're that couple. BITE ME.

I love focaccia for their food. They make good food and are available for my breakfast cravings before work but why oh why do they always get my order wrong?? This has happened on many many occasions. They've put onions on my omelette when I've asked for mushrooms, skipped my ham on my ham egg and cheese sandwich, given me pancakes when I order french toast... :( even when it isn't a busy hour, and there are only three orders cooking total, they just cant get my food right.

fyi.. i was on the other side of focaccia.. where they grill meat for u..

mashed potatoes..
felt like a rubbery glob in my mouth..
the fries..
remniscient of BK fries..
and  the salmon..
was just some pan fried fish.. with no seasoning.. no salt.. no pepper..

and the counter guy exerts this "pushy sales man" aura listing off everything on the menu.. super upselling..
i understand that thats his job.. but it makes me feel forced to buy something even though nothing was appealing.. and i also felt SUPER rushed to make a decision.. even though there was no one else in line.

maybe the other side is better.. but as of now.. it is guilty by association

The problem with Focaccia is the clientele.

The women are all beautiful.  Beginning around 11:30, they elegantly assemble in front of the huge ready-made salad collection, debating which one is the lowest in sugar, carbs, fat, and flavor.

The men are dressed professionally and stand frozen.  Gazing at the women, with their heads slightly tilted to the left, they watch these women make the most important decision of their day:  Greek or Italian?  In fact, they stare even more intently then they did at the strippers their bros "coerced" them into watching last night at that sleazy club in North Beach.

*VOICEOVER:  Like sands through the hourglass...so are the Days of Our Lives*

Janney enters from stage left.  A tall gal who is subtly attempting to nudge herself between Barbie and Ken's introductory eye-sex, so that she may get a better look at the fabulous deli case.   Wow!  How good does bacon & mozzarella on sourdough sound?

Although she desires a sandwich (which the place is known for) she settles for a delicious salad.  She almost buys an orange, but notices that something is funky with the peel and stops pre-purchase.  Saving 70cents leaves her feeling satisfied.  But not as much as noticing the herpes medicine in Ken's purse...err manbag.

Moral of the story:  Examine the goods before you purchase them.

First, I got sick to my stomach twice from eating pre-packaged salads here (and that's after throwing away the rancid tomatoes).

Then, I abandoned my vow never to return, as the more you eat out in the Financial District, the fewer options seem appealing.

Third, I managed to learn the made to order salad system:  Stand in line to order your salad, stand in second line to pay the cashier.  Swallow salad quickly during the 10 minutes remaining of your lunch.

Finally, I learned to ignore the rudeness and disdain emanating from every lady who makes the salads.

But today, my patience has been worn too thin when my salad box arrived from the mixing station 1/3rd empty!  One thing you could count on here were the salad boxes so full that you couldn't even mix them yourself.

And now I am still hungry, and have nothing left but to spill my soreness to yelp...
