Addiction (n.): Kati rolls
Kasa is one of those places where you go for lunch and then want to go again for dinner. Yes, it is that great and that affordable! Savory classic Indian dishes wrapped up in a roti---so divine! So addicted.
Enough said---5-stars. If you want details from an addict, read on:
Favorites
Karahi Paneer!!! The turkey kabob and chicken tikka masala are tied for second. Sorry I just can't choose. If I could eat three at a time, I would. Two is more than enough for me, but I plan to soon work my way up to eating three (as any good addict would).
Portions
One: $5.50, for a snack or light meal.
Two: $8.95. more than enough for anyone with a normal appetite.
Three: $11.95, if you haven't eaten all day or simply have a large appetite.
Thali: $10.95, I haven't tried one, but I have had the rice and daal on the side (just ask!) and both are as good as it gets. The daal is so savory; the rice fragrant.
To go
To bring my addiction home, I recently picked up two kati rolls to go (chicken tikka masala and the turkey kabob). The roti was substantial enough to make the journey from Kasa to mi casa without getting the least bit soggy. I had to know if they would make it home to me okay, and I was skeptical, but overjoyed that it worked out! Each roll gets wrapped in foil, like a taqueria burrito, and the thick and creamy raita and fresh side salad are packed up in separate to-go containers.
Overall
As an addict, I've tried everything on the menu and all of the regular six choices, plus specials are to-die-for-delicious! The super fresh side salad started off a little too "plain" for me, BUT, the sous chef came out to ask about the food--maybe since I'm there constantly (?!)---so I shared my opinion on the salad and about two weeks later IMO it was improved . . . they are looking for and listening to customer feedback for sure!
Feedback on Feedback
Those who write about the food being bland or not spicy enough must have *dead* taste buds because the spice level is PERFECTION, from the curry, to the fresh-buttery (not oily!) roti, to the daal, nothing here is bland! Kati rolls should also not be compared to burritos in terms of quantity/size because kati's are filled with the main dish plus just the right amount of chutney and red onions, not with the big fillers of rice & beans. Plus, they taste 1000x better than a burrito.
5-stars
Fresh, quality, amazing food. Great concept. Affordable, great value. Wine and beer on tap, Indian drinks, includ'g chai. CLEAN + design-conscious place to eat in the Castro (but not pretentious or trying too hard). Friendly, helpful customer service that doesn't cost an arm and a leg!
Finally . . .
Great place for groups (sit at communal table or at tables w/benches). Everyone orders and pays separately so no dealing with splitting the check. Or go alone and people watch at the window facing counter while you devour your newest food addiction . . . AND last but not least, it's kid friendly if your kid is awesome enough to like Indian food!
Can't think of a better addition to 18th Street!!!

I like discovering new foods. Especially foods that I thoughtI ate but I find hidden on the bottom shelf. Yes score! I discovered Kasa the other day wandering around Castro desperate for nourishment. You must understand I spent the afternoon working at a chocolate store surrounded by chocolate and was filled with chocolate and little else. I got the roll with tikka masala chicken. Biting into it was pure bliss. Just the right amount of spice which I adore with some cooling sides was perfect. Loved the metal plates. Prison ware baby.

In a blind tasting between Kasa and any of the stellar kati roll places in Manhattan, it would be no contest - Kasa still has ways to go. But the fillings are tasty, the condiments spiced well, and the service super quick. Big plus is the sunny space, which is a definite improvement from the greasy spoon locations usually reserved for the best kati rolls.
What was missing was the flaky paratha (these were a little more like a regular roti). And, the fillings were runnier than I like, which made the whole thing turn soggy fast. Still, a solid B+ effort.

I was very happy to see some new blood in the restaurant scene in the Castro. The space is beautifully design. Minimalist, hard surfaces, metal chairs, and high ceilings.
One has to order and pay for the food at the counter. The woman behind the counter had a cool accent, but the live room made it difficult to hear her. I ordered the Kati Roll with lamb curry and Aloo Jeera. It came with salad and raaita on a metal plate. Each roll consisted of the filling wrapped in flaky, buttery roti.
Positives:
The raaita was a minty, sweet seasoned yogurt side dish. It was cool and refreshing.
Both lamb and potato filling were tasty and spicy.
Negatives:
The salad was almost inedible. It was so sour from the vinegar.
The roti (bread) was so very greasy. I wiped my hands on my napkin several times. By the end of the meal, the napkin was dark from the grease.
The restaurant is loud mainly because of the hard surfaces. There were only 6 people in the restaurant. Hate to think about trying to converse when it's full.
Hope the owners read this and try to make some changes.

Kasa, Kasa, Kasa...
We ordered delivery, which they stated would take one hour. It took two hours and we live 2.1 miles away. So after waiting two hours for the food we were starving...however, we don't think our being famished influenced our experience of the food.
We ordered the kati rolls: chicken tikka, chicken tikka masala, lamb curry and aloo jeera. They were all amazingly delicious but our favorites were the lamb and the chicken tikka masala.
We definitely will eat here again because the quality and flavor were superb. I hope they improve their delivery service.
OMG.
The best dang food I have had in weeks. Perfect color, taste, smell, and temperature.

Chipotle meets Indian food, that tastes like Italian food, presented like Mexican food. It's not that great, especially for the high price they charge.
My chicken tikka masala tasted more like a cacciatore, and the tortilla-like thing they give you was hard and stale. Where's my naan?!?
I will say the yogurt sauce (raita) and condiments weren't bad, but for the same $12, I'd be much better off at an Indian buffet.
Ive never actually had the honor of eating at this little hotspot I've heard so much about but we had the company cater a lunch in the office. The service was prompt & friendly. Tim & his staff are great at picking out a selection for you if you are not familiar with Indian cuisine. We had a good assortment including a nice salad, the everpopular chicken tikka masala, a lentil dish and rice. They also brought us the specialty which were the kati rolls. A big hit in the office. If you are looking for a delightful and easy to deal with catering service, this is one to choose!

Shrimpy eaters, and I mean in appetite size not the seafood, be warned. They will try to get you to order two Kati rolls but all you need is one. I can eat 1/2 of a Cancun burrito. If that's your standard too, then you just need one roll here.
I want Kasa's yogurt recipe so I can put it on everything I eat. If the okra special is on the menu and you like okra then, by golly, get it!

I love the concept. I love the food. Kasa is a great addition to the neighborhood and a welcome alternative to burritos and sandwiches for lunch. The Kati rolls are delicious, convenient, and reasonably priced. I love Indian food, but a lot of times the food has not-so-great digestive effects. NOT at Kasa. It always settles well, which probably speaks to the high quality ingredients. The service has always been very friendly and helpful. The decor is clean, airy, modern, but not contrived. It's great for lunch or a simple dinner, especially before or after a cocktail or beer in the neighborhood.

So I picked up my girl from yoga and we were both a bit hungry so I said lets try something we haven't tried but something clean and kasa was perfect. everything about it - delicious, clean and inexpensive Indian food. We had the 3 rolls at $11.95, one was better than the other! The chicken tikka massala was excellent as well as the cumin potatoes. The paneer with vegetables was very good too. Beware though, everything is very spicy! They even treated us to a kingfisher beer. Will be definitely visitng again to try their other dishes!

This is a yummy alternative to a burrito, and they have beer on tap which always earns an extra star in my book.
Both the lamb curry and the chicken tikka massala kati were delicious. I had the Chicken Kati prepared unda style, where the dip the bread in egg batter and cook it. Delicious! My only gripe would be that the rolls are sort of 'drippy'. A little bit of foil wrapping would help contain the juicy deliciousness!

For speedy, scrumptious food --eat at Kasa. It's decently priced, they serve beer & wine and you can sit outside and enjoy the busy neighborhood. The karahi paneer and aloo jeera are amazing. I got a side of daal, which was pretty good but not excellent. The kati rolls are a little too buttery/oily for me, but overall the food, service, bathroom, location and atmosphere are excellent. I will return frequently, if not to excess.
Plop, plop, fizz, fizz. Oh what a relief it is!
For those of a certain vintage like me, you'll recognize the Alka Seltzer refrain. After eating at Kasa, that's what I needed. Not that the food was bad, it wasn't. It mostly didn't agree with me. My friend who had dinner with me greatly enjoyed the food. The woman serving the dishes was friendly and helpful when I asked for a vegetarian dish only.
Drinking beer with my entree was helpful to cut some of the heat of the cauliflower and potato dish and daal.
Would I come back? Maybe, maybe not. Perhaps to try a kati roll with the karahi paneer (Indian cheese with green peppers, marinated onions and chutney.)

I went back and tried the Karahi Paneer (and got the Chicken Tikka Masala again) and oh man, this one was awesome. This place is beauty in simplicity. If you're the kind of person apprehensive about Indian food, this place makes it accessible. Plus it's quick - and you don't gorge yourself on an Indian food buffet and the place is a bit cleaner and higher quality than your typical Naan & Curry.

I was excited to try this place after reading about it on thrillist sf. I hadn't yet seen the yelp reviews, but my roommate and I were hungry - delivery indian food typically hits the spot after a less than interesting monday. plus, our go-to indian restaurant was beginning to see our ordering pattern whenever we called.
First time to Kasa, roommate got the chicken tikka masala, and I ordered the lamb curry roti roll. To get our order up to the $20 minimum delivery fee, I ordered a second roll - the cumin potato one - plus a mango lassi.
wow, were we disappointed...
(1) the roti rolls were small and greasy.
(2) SALTY. like really salty. please pass the water.
(3) the roti tasted more like a sub-par corn tortilla.
(4) roommate's lentils tasted like chili.
After eating, I went to yelp to see if roommate and i were alone in these sentiments; apparently we were. needless to say, we will return to our local standby eatery.
sidenote: kudos on the 45 minute prompt delivery

5 of us went to Kasa a few mins past 10pm, and rather than telling us they were closed, they decided to feed us :) That type of attitude in itself earned them a couple of points.
New Yorkers may totally disagree with me, but I personally liked Kasa better than the Kati Roll Co. The teas was flavorful but rich, almost a meal in itself. I sampled the karahi paneer and the chicken tikka masala- both hit the spot.

I ended up for a time in the Castro after starting my day at Fort Baker in Marin at 7:30 AM to cheer Gayle on during her Susan G. Komen Walk for the Cure. But first, my travels took me to Union Street, the Marina, and Japantown, with an eye at ending up at the Bi-Rite Creamery to see for myself whether the tales of ice cream nerd-vanna were true.
But it was lunch time and as I waked down 18th, the clean modern lines and the metal chairs, counters, and plates of Kasa drew me in. I had one of their rolls which were delicious and had a really good kick. What I really needed to cool that down was the ice cream and not the beer, but the Kingfisher was a great chaser nonetheless.
I look forward to coming back for the Indian and ice cream loop again!

I really, really wanted to like this place, and I love the concept of fast, cheap, fresh, well-done Indian food in a chic setting, very near where I live no less. But I had a kati roll with chicken, and it didn't agree with me at all. My stomach felt unsettled the rest of the day and evening. I enjoy Indian food and eat it fairly reguarly, so I don't think this was a case of a wimpy, non-adventurous stomach. Also was it just me, but wasn't the relish on the side a little bit tart, and not in a good way? And as others have noticed, the roll was kind of drippy too. Clearly I'm in the minority of reviewers in my negative experience, so maybe I'll give it another shot one day.
Drippy oil alert -- They now slather their kati in butter! Ack, ask for it without butter! (Still tasty, just super greazy!)

A new math program has been implemented in my district, and as responsible teachers, we must learn the new material before school begins...and as blond babes Barbie and Skipper once said, "Math is HARD. Let's go SHOPPING!"
KIDDING. No letters, please.
(Just so you know, I hate Barbie and Skipper...although I did have a crazy Skipper doll that grew into adolescence when I twisted her arm around one rotation, complete with a Girls Gone Wild body. She shrunk back to a pre-puberty Skipper when I twisted it back, however. Very anti-climactic.)
Although I LOVE math and learning of all kinds, day-long Math seminars are not my favorite. They suck me dry of any will to live and keep me in a state of confusion and self-loathing until they release me at the end of the day.
I wait with bated breath until lunch every time I have to attend one, and this year I was lucky enough to be stationed right down the street from a little eatery called Kasa.
It's simple, quick, tasty food in the Castro.
They offer these Indian "rolls," which is basically your main course inside a warm toasty roti, served with a generous side of raita. No fuss, no muss.
Or you can order the $10.95 Thalis instead, which is a roll deconstructed, with rice, daal, raita and salad.
Their chicken tikka masala rolls are perfectly sized and delicious. One is enough for a quick lunch, two will fill you up if you're starving, three will give you uncomfortable abdominal distension.
One is $5.50, two is $8.95, and three is $11.95 (plus $6.00 for the Pepto Bismol you'll be purchasing at the Wal-Mart down the street if you choose to eat three. Trust.)

There are too few restaurants that let you order and pay for the amount of food that you actually want to eat - Kasa is one of them. You could get away with paying as little as $6 for a meal, and by SF standards, that's cheap.
1 Kasi roll for $5.50, 2 for $8.95, 3 for $11.95 - all accompanied with a side of salad and cooling raita. Get the deconstructed version of the roll, the "Thalis", and you'll also get a side of slow-simmered daal and basmati rice for $10.95.
Friendly service, well-kept and clean dining area, and most importantly, delicious food. JONASAPPROVED!

FINALLY! An Indian joint that won't kill me with cinnamon!!
I am deathly allergic to the stuff, so the idea of most Indian, Moroccan or dessert foods is something that I don't often do because, well, I kinda like my life and want to enjoy it a bit longer.
So imagine my glee and delighted surprise when I actually found a spot that had only one item on the menu that I couldn't eat! Sweeet! I tried one of their 3 item combos and loved the "tofu" dish and raved to my friend how amazing this "tofu" tasted. Well, duh, seems it wasn't actually tofu but instead cheese, so yeah, no wonder I loved it.
The food definitely has a hefty kick for this spice-fearing chicky, but it was really good and if you order one of their yummy beers or amazingly deelish white wines, you will be set. I say "amazingly" because i hate sweet wines, but paired with the food, it made for a dyn-O-mite combo!
Definitely put this place on your list. It's reasonably priced, the owners are really awesome and the location is grand.

I've passed by Kasa numerous times on my way home from rock climbing at Mission Cliffs in the Mission. Every time I think I should stop in I've either already had a burrito, or I'm on the way home for pasta.
Last night I stopped in for the first time and couldn't have been happier with my decision. The food was delicious. The service was interested in my well being. And the ambience was awakening. It was everything I was looking for.
I like the term another Yelper used..."fast casual". This town is known for burrito shops. Make this your regular Indian shop for "fast casual" dining.
The gay look, the LA look, call it what you will--minimalist white interiors seem to be the order of the day in these parts, and as Maria D points out, the Castro is simply not a serious player in this town's hyper-competitive food scene (I guess the boys just gotta stay thin or something). So if you want good eats around here, you don't have a whole lot of choice.
Anyway, love it or hate it, you gotta admit the menu at Kasa matches the design--there's a whopping 6 dishes on it, each of which can be served as a traditional plate or as a "Kati" roll--basically the kind of Indian burrito (or bur-roti?) that I've been jury-rigging out of naan & curries for years (really, *is* there anything better?). At 3 for $11.95, this is probably your best deal price-wise. And I have to say, not only are they well-constructed (leakage/collapse was minimal), but all the fillings (CTM, lamb, and kahari paneer) were loaded with flavor. And whatever you do, don't forget their darkly sweet, deeply spicy homemade chai, which I think it's safe to say handily beats out N&C's (admittedly free) brew.
Is this "authentic" Indian food? I don't think so. But just approach it with a fresh and open mind and it stands on its own merits (it's like the Harry Potter movies--the more you forget the books, the better they get).

Kasa had a lot of work to do because I had a special affection for the tasty burritos of the taqueria that was here before. The soccer games on the TV above the door. The red-stoner eyes and ready smiles of the servers...
The folks at Kasa are even friendlier than the taqueristas they replaced. This is one of those "fast casual" places that really is addictive. It's one of the staples of my diet now because it's easy and delicious (and affordable). I think there may be health consequences in eating too much, but that's why I'm taking up running again.
My favorites are the lamb and the paneer. The little pepper-and-whatever-else-is-around salad they serve with it is sometimes amazing, sometimes ehn. But it tastes very fresh every time.
Best. Chai. Ever.
I drank it Friday night and woke up the next day thinking about it. Yum. I've already decided it's going to be my Friday drink: "Thank god it's Friday. I need a serious drink...I need a chai." I don't know if purists will like it but I'm in looove with it. Sweet, milky, delicious-just as advertised. And a decent price, only $2.50 for a cup. Cheaper than the chain coffee shops and more delicious.
As for the food, er I wasn't not too big on it. You can watch them make the wraps. It's nice and fresh, but why so small for $5?

Dropped by Kasa after hearing about it on Daily Candy. Hope this is not lame of me to say, but it's like eating an Indian burrito.
They're delishooooohioso.
2 Kati rolls, one with tikka masala and the other chicken tikka. Honey got the thalis (dinner plate) with lamb curry. Liked my kati's the best. Each bite was a burse of flavor. I didn't feel stuffed like I normally do after an Indian dinner, so I think it's a great place for lunch or a light dinner.
People taking orders were so sweet. He apologized for the wait, but it was totally understandable cause there was a line going out the door!

Love the chicken tikka masala.
Have eaten here 4 times.
The first time was heaven. The rolls were hearty, the service was great and the energy was good from the employees and patrons.
The next two times were great.
Yesterday I didn't have as good of an experience. The pretty dread-locked woman behind the counter was super-skimpy with the chicken tikka masala in the roll - she actually took some of what he put into the roll back out. My rolls looked more like flautas. I ended up ordering an extra roll since she cheaped out on the portion.
The food was still good, but I was pissed off that the woman downsized my rolls. While eating,I noticed that while the male cashier was out busing tables, the same pretty dread-locked woman handled money with her food gloves on and then went back to handling the food. The health department will shut this place down if they don't practice safer food practices.
I am saddened that my first three experiences were so terrific followed by a very bad visit. I was recommending this place to all my friends, but now I am hesitant to say anything.

Modern and unique are rarely words used to describe Indian Restaurants in San Francisco, yet that is exactly what Kasa is. While the Kati roll is not all that unique itself, they can be found all over India, the UK and NYC, this is one of the only places specializing in the rolls here in SF. I love the modern feel of the restaurant with upbeat music and an upbeat and friendly staff. The food is wonderful; CTM, chicken tikka and lamb curry rolls were all delicious, nicely spiced and the meat very tender. The key here though are the side dishes, the yogurt, chutneys and side salad are all made with great attention to detail and stand head shoulders above other restaurants.
I chatted with owner/chef and you can see that she truly loves what she does and that this is her passion. The food tastes more like home cooked food than restaurant food and that is always a great sign.
All the posts about food poisoning are clearly rubbish, the chef is committed to using high quality ingredients and the restaurant is so busy that food can't sit around very long AND the restaurant is so darn small that they couldn't store the food long enough for it to go bad.
Give this place a try for a unique spin on Indian food.

Finally! SF has long been in need of a joint like this. It was lightyears (or maybe just 7 years) behind NYC in the kati roll department.
As far as the rolls go, i'd say they taste fresher and much less greasy than those at the Kati Roll Company in NY (real hole in the wall, but nevertheless good) although the fillings offered here are different and not entirely traditional. Turkey kabob, eh?
Actually the turkey one was pretty damn good. Chicken tikka masala, another unusual choice for a filling, was even better. The other choices are all pretty common variations. Still have to try the karahi paneer.
I especially liked the raita and little side salad that accompany the rolls. They're a good contrast to the heavy, fatty rolls and will make you feel like less of a glutton. Yes, despite the fact that you are ingesting more food.
Lets just get one thing straight here people... it seems like a lot of San Franciscans are seeing this restaurant as some kind of Cal-Mex-Indian fusion place, as so many confused souls are using the term "indian burrito". There is not, and has never been, any such thing as an Indian burrito. These are kati rolls, an 100% indian snack that was NOT invented by some indians who moved to california, fell in love with its food and hipsters, and decided to open up their own wacky version of a burrito place on 18th street. No.
After all, do you go around calling moussaka "Greek lasagna"?
Remember that old acronym, KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid? It is rather crude phrase to describe an elegant principle - the elimination of that which is unnecessarily complex.
Kasa, the new casual Indian cafe in the Castro, exemplifies this principle, from its open, pared down surroundings (consisting of 2 tops, 4 tops, a counter and a community table), streamlined menu, great prices, and simple, fresh, high-quality ingredients. I've been here twice now, and was very pleased both times.
Service is immediate - you go up to the counter and get in line, and select from the menu of 6 staple dishes or one of the specials, which they prepare for you cafeteria style. You can order them either as a Kati Roll with a salad, and raita, or as a Thali, their self-named "deconstructed" roll which comes with daal, rice, a salad and raita. The Kati is the cheaper, more lunch-like way to go ($5.50 for 1, $8.95 for 2), whereas the Thali ($10.95) is more like a meal.
I've had the Lamb Curry, the Chicken Tikka Masala, and the Karahi Paneer - all delicious. The meat is free-range, so you can feel good about that. There are reasons to love both preparations - the delicious roti used for the Kati, or the creamy daal that comes with the Thali.
Drinks range from beer and wine to sodas to chai. I like the Mango soda the best.
One last great sign that good things are happening here? The folks at Kasa listen to their customer comments. Soon after opening, they were inundated with requests for vegan options, and now offer them daily. If you are vegan, make sure you ask for fresh roti, which they will make for you without butter.
The owners and staff are super-cool - say hi and let them know what you think. Personally, I wish SF had more restaurants like this - it reminds me of places that I have been to in London, which offer great food at a great price, nice enough to sit down and have a leisurely meal, but equally accommodating if you have to eat and run.
Today's thought: lunch at Kasa - wonderful. Lunch with Laura B. smiling all the way through it - sublime. Now that's a great KISS if I ever saw one.

I really have to give these people some credit! They are really listening to what people tell them/yelp about and making some changes here and there to reflect what some of our minor complaints have been. Now I notice that there's a sign where you order that tells you to let them know if you'd like to customize... with sides, spice level, or even have your roti dipped in egg for $1 more... I gotta try that sometime...sounds yummy!
I also noticed that today when I ordered 3 kati rolls, they gave me 2 cups of raita instead of just 1! HOORAY for that because it takes me about 1 lil cup of raita per 1 1/2 kati rolls... 2 if I stretch it. So I'm quite satisfied that they are trying to listen to what people are saying within reason... my review said I'd like more raita... today... I get more raita. Still no sign of a dessert, but for the fact that they are trying... upgrades them to 5 stars in my book.
Besides... what if they did 1 really scrumptious dessert like the ichigo daifuku at Eiji (which is made in limited quantities each day) and it sold out just as fast during dinner... then we'd all be dying trying to make sure we got there before it sold out. I think for now I can live without one... maybe one day in the future there'll be something sweet on the menu... I'm a patient man... well most of the time anyway.

The pre-requisite to going to Kasa is that one should have a big appetite. The food is absolutely authentic home made Indian. I am personally a fan of the thali, and I simply love the chilli paneer and the turkey kebabs. The kachumbar salad and the raita is a perfect accompanyment to the aromas and Indian spices and flavours of the thali.
I love the Belgian beer too.
The kali daal is to die for.
Yum. I picked up a Thali to-go. $10.95.
Chicken Tikka (not Masala) with a nice bit of heat, superb dal, lots of lovely flavors and spices. Side salad, cilantro chutney, delicious roti. The place was clean, clean, clean and the food was good.
I'll be back with Indian friends soon, and I'm going to order a Kati roll with the cumin-spiced potatoes, maybe a second one with the karahi paneer.
Thank goodness they are nearby, they may replace my favorite Thai restaurant. The menu is simple but oh-so-good.
