This is the best place to pick up fresh ravioli. Amazing! Words can not express how good it is. My family has been going there for 3 generations. It is so worth a try....go now :0) ok maybe in a few hours...it is like 6am
Lucca's is the perfect stop to pick up lunch on a nice day at Dolores park. 10 bucks will get you a huge sandwich, macaroni salad, a delicious kosher pickle and a bottle of water. Follow these 3 steps when ordering.
Grab a number when you walk in. Next pick your bread, meat & cheese. My favorite is A soft roll, prosciutto, spicy salami & fresh mozzarella. YUMMMMMM... No vegetables at this deli. They do offer however offer packets of mayo and mustard. I would also like to add for the all the pickles lovers 45 cents for a kosher, and 75 for a ginormous dill.
Business is steady so have a little patience.

this. place. just. rocks. so much stuff, not cheap, but everything looks so yum. perfect for a saturday to pick up a sandwich and some champagne.
A little bit of Old Italy in the Mission.
I love this place, not just for its great offerings, but its great style. I love walking in, taking a number, ordering my deli slices and being rung up on their antique registers. It makes me feel a little special, particularly when my number is called and everyone sighs hoping its theirs.
Now, I have to say, I order the same thing everytime I go, so I can't comment on the plethora of deli and grocery items they have. What I do get is proscuitto, fresh mozzarella, macaroni salad and bread. I take it to the park or beach and enjoy it. It's just a beautiful combination and I'm in love with my little tradition.
I suppose I should branch out and try their pastas. Either way, two thumbs way up!

I'd give them more stars if I could. Absolute best mushroom marinara I have EVER had. I drive way out of my way for the marinara as well as their ravioli. The guys that work there are wonderful: friendly, quick and knowledgeable. Only complaint I have is that they're not closer to where I live but I can deal with that.

Ummm.... they know me by first name here.
The guys that work here are awesome! So helpful and friendly and great.
The pesto is IV-worthy. Just take hits of it, straight up. Don't even mess around.
Cheese. They have a lot of good. A lot of good cheese. A lot of good cheese is a great thing.

get a ticket when you enter. One of the liquor nerd's best kept secrets: this place has the best prices, by far, for Chartreuse and Absinthe. If you've got Chartreuse tastes on an Herbsaint's budget, go to Lucca. Bonus points also for selling China Masagli, invented and manufactured in Lucca, Italy.
(would be 5 stars, but too damn crowded.)

Great ravioli. They make these bite size ravioli with different fillings - found in the back freezer. Spinach, pumpkin, cheese. You have to ask for the meat ones if there are none in the freezer. A box is about $6, and feeds maybe 1 very hungry person. There's tortellini & pasta in the front deli area about $8/lb. All very good. Yum, can't wait to get back there for more! It gets quite crowded on the weekends, so go early and be patient.
omg omg omg...i love this place soooo much! The ravioli here is to die for. We order to go here at least once a week for some ravioli goodness.

I don't usually love sandwiches....however, my friend brought me to Lucca's one day, and I will never ever forget the sandwich I had. It was probably the best sandwich I have ever had...in my life. Probably because it had two of my favorite things on it- really fresh pesto & high quality prosciutto. This deli has a lot of meaty options and a great bread selection. I chose focaccia bread with a tomato sauce topping as my bread- added fresh pesto and prosciutto. The sandwich was $9 or so- it was HUGE. The guy who made it was so so nice and gave me an extra slice of focaccia. The sandwich sounds simple, but it was so tasty. Best. Sandwich. Ever.
On the weekend I came up to SF in search of an apartment, I passed this place and was intrigued. On the day my Citiapartments dude drove me around to look at actual apartments, I looked at one a few doors down and caught a whiff. On my errand running lunch hour the other day, I found myself parked across the street and you know what they say, when in Valencia, do as the Valencians do and chow down on some Italian yumminess.
(Oh c'mon, like you've never read that proverb)
Anyway, I finally made it in this teensy little hole in the muro and checked out the goods. Sure enough there was an enticing variety of meats and cheeses, along with ready made Focaccia bread creations and even freshly made pasta. The aisles, while small, were lined with tasty imported treats that made me feel like I was home again. Not in Italy, but at Bay Cities Italian Deli in LA :)
They also had a ton of Italian wines, but since it was a lunch hour, I passed on that, because I NEVER drink on lunch hours. Ever! ;) I ordered an Italian club sammich and while it was a bit dry, since they don't put any lettuce or tomatoes on it, the meat and cheese were soooo tasty. My suggestion, just grab one of these bad boys and then take it home and douse it in mustard or mayo or whatever your pleasure is :)
Good stuff!

I''ve been coming here for YEARS. It's close to my house and the next best thing to North Beach. Great fresh pasta, breads, deli meats and cheeses, and Italian imports. The guys behind the counter are friendly, fast, and informative. Next time you don't feel like cooking, swing by Lucca and grab a box of their fresh ravioli and homemade bolognese. Don't forget the bottle of Chianti or Prosecco! Salute!

Dear cute guy behind the counter,
I liked your adorable hat and the way you efficiently swooped into the glass case and weighed out my spinach fettuccine. When I asked for pesto, you intuitively knew that I would have no clue how much to ask for and handed me just the right amount. You even gave me a tip: put some olive oil in it and put it in the freezer if there's extra (like I'm not going to dip that entire loaf of bread into the remains).
Bread...fettuccine...wine...pesto... "looks like a perfect meal," you said. Yep. Too bad I'm probably going to be eating it alone. Sniff. Wanna come over? You liked my rain boots! It probably helped that I was wearing a skirt.
Love,
Your loyal customer

With gentrification slithering its way up and down Valencia St. over the past few years, here's one Mission icon that I hope manages to survive unchanged. The good news is, given how crowded this place s at most hours of the day, I know I'm not alone, which I hope means the place isn't going anywhere anytime soon. (If there's any bad news it's that they oh-so-promptly lock their doors at 6:00 pm and they aren't open at all on Sundays so plan ahead!)
This narrow, often crowded Italian corner store totally oozes Old World charm and you're guaranteed personal attention and often a little humor while you're there. Along with the wide selection of Italian imports and fresh-made pastas (if you buy only one thing, you must try the cheese ravioli with meat sauce), Lucca's is a nice place to hob-nob with the neighbors and exchange recipe ideas. Sure, you might spend a few more pennies here than you might spend at TJ's or Safeway, but you won't find this kind of freshness or such a pleasurable shopping experience in any regular grocery store, or even at many other delis either. This place is special. I really love those guys! (yes, even the cranky one.)

Great ravioli and pasta and all.
But those sandwiches are amazing. Better than any other Lucca. Hot salami ("Joe Montana used to order that") hot coppa, provolone, maybe some smoked turkey and prosciutto on a hard roll... The Perfect Sandwich. On top of that, real, genuinely nice people work behind the counter. Pick up some focaccia and a San Pellegrino orange soda and you're set.
Lucca rules.
I frequent the City College's Mission Campus which right across the street from this place. Every time I'm on campus, I tell myself I'm going to try that place one day.
And finally today was that day. I finally went into Lucca's and I was glad that I did. I pulled a number and happily waited for my number to be called. I watched other patrons order some ravioli with sauce and some order prosciutto until finally my number was called.
Since it was my first time, I asked the gentlemen who was helping me what he suggested I get. So answered a small series of questions and then presumed to suggest that I get one of their sandwiches. So I did just that.
I ended up ordering a veggie sandwich on a soft roll. OMG! It was too die for. Yummy pesto spread on the soft roll with pieces of sun-dried tomatoes topped with mozzarella. Orgasmic.
I also order a "combo" which has cheese, ham and salami. Served plain with condiments on the side. He said his sandwich was "tasty" and we definitely will go back and probably try the ravioli which I hear is to fantastic.
I look forward to many more adventures across the street at Lucca's.
*Evviva*
I came in here with some co-workers today and fell in love. Apparently this is an institution for Italians in San Francisco that I didn't know about... I feel a little sheepish admitting this.
They have fabulous meats, sausages, raviolis, cheese, and anything else you can imagine thats yummy and Italian. We ordered some sandwiches that were just meat, cheese, bread, and they gave us some mustard/mayo packets. They were delish! I didn't put any mustard or may on mine (I despise those condiments) and it was still so yummy and not dry at all (sometimes I have to put a little teeny bit of mayo on sandwiches as a last resort so I don't choke on the dry bread.)
You can buy fresh ravioli and sauce and I definitely plan on doing that and making an Italian dinner this week!
Oh and the guys working are so friendly and sweet. Giving samples left and right. Having a great time. Love it!

Veggie sandwich, yum yum! lots of pesto, mozzarella, sun-dried tomato, sigh..... complete with an Orangina and a slice of cheesecake.
The service is great, the "boys" are always very helpful, always cheerful as well.
Yummy. Yummy. Yummy.
The servers behind the counter are sweet and cheerful and willing to let you try everything in the damn case if it helps you make up your mind.
They have everything I need to re-create lunch at my grandparents house when I was a kid: many kinds of cheeses, cold cuts, pickled things and, if I'm a good girl, I get a square of torrone for dessert.
...and the ravioli! The ravioli are morsels from heaven filled with love.

Ever since I read about this Italian delicatessen in Patricia Unterman's "SF Food Lover's Guide", i've been wanting to check it out. It's been in business in the neighborhood for over 70 years and by seeing the place and what they provide, you'll know why. Once you step through the door you'll encounter their deli case that stretches across the shop, filled with an amazing cheese, meat & food assortment. They have a great selection of reasonably priced, house made ravioli, tortellini and huge squares of pizza - all perfect for taking home for a quick, tasty dinner. The store also stocks food and wine imported from Italy. On my visit, i picked up the meat-filled tortellini and pizza, which were fantastic. This is a great destination for an Italian food lover!

Well it's not like this place needs another review but I just couldn't resist. Today was my first day inside Lucca's. I have always either driven past this place or walked by Sundays (when it's closed) so I never knew what I was missing. OMG this place is great. Fresh raviolis, all the nice temptations in the deli counter, WINE! and of course the friendly staff. I was a little overwhelmed with the crowd, but they keep things moving efficiently if you grab a number. I'll get to know the routine better once I start going here more frequently.

Everything about this place is great. Ravioli is wonderful, but don't overcook it. Good sauces. The sandwiches are served plain - they give you little packets of standard issue mustard and mayo. But...the bread is fresh and fantastic, and the salami in particular is so good that you almost don't want to ruin it with the mayo and mustard. Better yet, go to a nearby produce store and buy a good tomato to eat with it.
The people behind the counter are friendly and patient. Can't think of a bad thing to say about this place. May it stay the same forever!
Not only can you find those elusive tiny Italian New Year's lentils here (they stock a gourmet brand from Umbria which my dinner guests raved over) but the counter guys will even give you tips on how to cook the goods once you get them home. My family has shopped here since the 60's and we agree it's one of those SF institutions that makes the city such a delicious place to live. A quick trip here on NYE saved me endless hours in line at Safeway and Trader Joe's for specialty items (gruyere, pancetta, parmigiano reggiano, heavy cream, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo) that I probably wouldn't have found anyway. Their ravioli and handmade fettucine are great too.

Great deli sammies, and the Mr. tells me the fresh meat ravioli is delish. Only frozen ravioli for veggies, though, so I had to take off a star. I love to shop the imported stuff, too. Italian cookies and truffle oil and all kinds of cool yummies. This is my favorite place to load up on easy peasy elements of a "homemade" dinner.

I'm psyched to be moving to this neighborhood and more psyched to be living a half block from Lucca's...the place has been around for 85 years and the food is amazing. Fresh pasta, delicious meatballs, sausage, sandwiches, and everything special and Italian that you would ever want. i wanted everything when I walked in. They have 5+ kinds of fresh bread and lots of delicious and special Italian sodas. They even have a liquor license. I think I'll be here every day when I finally move in...

I'm not a good enough cook to really know how great this place probably is. What I do know is that they are always friendly, and despite how busy it may be, they answer questions and offer solutions or alternatives to your needs.
Everything is excellent and you can easily find everything you need for a meal in one location.

Maia's feel-good recipe:
1. turn down the lights and light some candles
2. turn on lonnie liston smith, or other such funky music
3. put on pajama pants
4. make some espresso in the french press
5. look around my room and wish I had a couch or cushy chair before building up my pillows in the corner on top of my bed
6. cozy under my covers
7. tear off pieces of pandoro bread from Lucca's and dip them into the espresso before eating
:)
The guys at Lucca are sweethearts. I truly feel for them as we all hungrily lurk at the counter, furtively clutching our number and jockeying for the best view of the goods.
The deli is reasonably priced and I've always been happy with their quality. The pizza and ravioli rock!

A cool little Italian deli right smack in the middle of the Mission. Great ravioli, Prosciutto, Italian wines and a real New York kind of feel. Even the dudes behind the counter remind me of the east coast. Maybe not as authentic as NY but close..

Love the place! I've always wanted to go to a place like this since there was no place like this in Hawaii. Anyway, it was my first time, the place is a little small but compact place with lots of Italian goodies. Prices are decent, which is always good. I got some spinach pasta, 2 boxes of ravioli- spinach and holiday special (they have pumpkin and cheese ravioli as well), 2 kinds of sauces- red sauce with meat and cream sauce (they both are very good!), and salame tuscano which is awesome- my favorite (they have many more choices of Italian cold cuts). It looks like they also have sandwiches with different kind of yummy sauces, but I didn't get that. Maybe next time! On top of all those goodness, the people are pretty nice to us although the place was small and packed with people at 5:30 pm on Saturday. But, I enjoyed going there and next time, I would try the sandwich and one of their selections of cheese!
All the dudes working here wear cute little white hats and know a lot about their products.
They carry awesome, super-duper fresh, made-that-day in-house ravioli, pasta, fettucini etc. There's a good cheese selection, salami, sausage, wine, Olive Oil, fresh bread. fresh pesto. fresh EVERYTHING. also boxed pasta and stuff like that.
Our ravioli last night was awesome.
The Mozzarella was awesome.
Lucca's is all around fantastic. I am a believer.
oh yeah, and I live only a block and a half away. Bonus!

Everything you need to impress your Girl over here.
for you single men they have pizza by the trey for 5 bucks. Its no roundtable but its fun stoner pizza.
my only problem is the deli. The have no produce and mustard and mayo is on the side. I feel like I am eating a little kid sandwhich. They say its the real italian way but i think they just dont wanna bother with the produce. The soft sour roll is the best.
Fresh pasta
sucks that they are closed on sundays
Lovely boys in lovely uniforms who remember your name selling lovely cheeses/antipasti/legendary fresh pasta/olive oils/balsamics and loads of tins/jars of salty and preserved goodies as well as your bog standard Italian basics. Their fresh, homemade pasta will change your life. Does unbelievably good 2ft long homemade breadsticks (which you will eat all by yourself before your dinner guests arrive) as well as tasty foccacia and other olive oil laden breads. To round it all off, they stock a mean range of nicely priced Italian wines with a shed load of scrummy chiantis.
Take a ticket as you enter (only needed if it's busy, which it can be at weekends) and have a nosey around as you wait to be called. One of the nicest San Francisco queues to be in.
gotta love a store that still uses a manual cash register. Lucca delivers the things you need to recreate that rustic peasant village in Tuscany without the 11 hr flight to Italy. Great bread, pasta, cured meats, dry goods.
the best ravioli...ever. sauce too, tasty. and fresh meatballs.
about once a week or so I head to Lucca's to buy some fresh pasta - spinach fettucine, ravioli, and the like. Hard to get out of there without a few othe things.
They pack quite a bit in this small place and I go when it's quiet (a weekday afternoon) so I can explore. Some of the best olives I've ever tasted were from Lucca's.
Beautiful food.
they don't fuck around here.
meats, cheeses, pastas, and imports.
when you order a sandwich, pick your bread, pick your meat and your cheese. no filler here.
