I think i'm over coffee forever... being a former starbucks employee.... but peetes is where I go if I cave in. I am not usually into coffee when I walk in, but I LOVE their teas... it's the perfect thing to boost my day. I am two blocks away and I go quite a bit, but there is nothing different about this location than any of the other. I'm afraid peetes is following the sad path of starbucks and making no location different than another... which bores me. Still a good product though... so 4 stars.

I have an obsessive personality - so the less addictive things I make a habit of drinking - the better.
Hence - why I've never been a big fan of coffee.
I have enough J-To pep to deal without it, and chew enough gum, without having to worry about coffee breath.
Still...I continue to visit Peets a good two or three times a week. Mostly cause of Richard T - who needs a twice daily caffeine kick, but also because it's close-by, I once saw and talked with Dave Chapelle here, the staff are pretty friendly, and Richard and I are still attempting to win the coveted customer of the week award (apparently we're on the list)
Oh and as far as baked goods go here.....they're far from good. Pass on them - and stick to the teas and coffee drinks.

I'm going four stars. The staff are friendly and decently consistent while dealing quickly with a ton of customers. Anyone that comes here is lucky. If you go to some of the Peet's in the suburbs they are NOT like this one and you might wait forever to get a sloppily made drink even if you're the only person in the place. In the grand scheme of Peet's Coffee, this location rates near the top.
Somewhat embarrassingly, I'm on track to spend over $500/yr at this place which probably means I need to start drinking more free coffee at the office.

I'm not really much of a coffee drinker, but when the eyelids are drooping and my elbows are permanently glued to my desk as a means to hold my tired head high, I will occasionally break down and get a cup of coffee or a latte or an espresso shot. When those rare moments occur, I'll come here. Not because Peet's is the best, but because it is literally about 54 steps from my office and when you are brain dead and in a haze of blegh, that is about all of the energy I can muster up for caffeine.
Would I ever actually hang out here? Not likely. It's more of an in and out, quickie sort of thing, but some things are just better that way...yes, even coffee.

The folks that work here are nice, I can't complain about the coffee, but my issue with this location is that it's a bit of an organizational clusterfuck. They try different things, but it doesn't seem to work. Without the rope that they occasionally have in front of the counter there to indicate "Hey! OMG! This is the line and this is where you need to stand!" folks seem to get confused. The fact that the space is on the smaller side doesn't seem to help. And the milk/sugar/whatever table is insane. It seems no matter where you stand you are always reaching over someone to get a stirrer, sugar packet, or whatever. You often need to rotate positions. It's like musical chairs or something.
It also wouldn't hurt if they kept some of the coffee cup sleeves up by the registers. Because that coffee can be dang hot and carrying it just a few feet to the milk/sugar/whatever table is not fun times.
But all that being said, I will continue to get my coffee here pretty much every morning. Because it's like, right there.
Updated 3/21/2007: Man, WTF!!!
This is what happened, step by step.
1) I walk up and order my small coffee. It's 1.65 i give her 2.00 - she doesn't give me change, ok, whatever, i was gonna throw it in their tip jar anyway.
2) They're out of coffee, she says coffee will take 30 seconds, I say ok, that's fine thanks and I wait.
3) The people after me get their coffee.
4) WTF - okay maybe those people ordered decaf.
5) Same girl that i paid oh 3 minutes ago asks me if I have been helped... ???
6) WTF!!
7) I tell her I had a small coffee.
8) WAS SHE FOR REAL?
9) O
10) M
11) G.
Good coffee, but COME ON.
Original review:
I saw Dave Chappelle here with all the other Yelp Staffers. My hands were sticky so i didn't shake his... hope he didn't think I was rude.
Oh, and I ordered a Vanilla Freddo so it didn't seem like I walked all the way from the office to Peet's just to see Dave and his all girl crew. The Freddo was great, it was crunchy, the crunchiest drink ever! Beats Starbuck's anyday. Trust.

1st of all, Peet's Coffee spits on Starbucks... This location is excellent, especially if you're taking a walk to the Metreon, YB Gardens or the Zeum. Minus 1 star for the bum that asked me for .25, dropped the quarter I gave her into her empty cup... then pulled out some real cash to pay for her coffee. I should've got my .25 cents worth and asked her for a sip...

As a proud employee of this location for the last year, I must comment on behalf of my fellow staff members and I in our defense....
We are human!
Not only do we serve Hundreds of decaffeinated people in less than an hour or so, ( we try very hard to do this with a positive attitude and a greeting and huge smile that is rarely returned to us) we also must keep condiments stocked, the place looking tidy for secret shoppers (coffee cops), take bean orders, redo Sally's order because she just decided she wants it iced and with soy (for free despite the 50 cent charge), as well as count money and like 10 other tasks that I won't write down and balance school work, second jobs, family life, volunteer services etc.
We apologize for running out of coffee sometimes but we most likely recently served 5 pounds of coffee to the last ten people in front of you in the line that your standing in (you know the one forming outside of the front door).
We apologize that we don't have a bathroom or wi-fi but we had no parts in designing the place and really have no control over that. Lucky for us we don't have one because if the condiment station can get in the shape it does at times God forbid the likely appearance of the bathroom at the end of the night.
Here are some tips to make your experience a pleasant and speedy one:
1. Say hello back to the barista who just greeted you instead of ignoring him or her, or replying "yea...small coffee." You just might feel a warm feeling inside due to the respect you just exchanged with the human behind the counter.
2. Do not be in the middle of a phone call while ordering.
3. Know what size you would like (we have simple ol' small, medium, and large) what you would like, whether or not you want whipped cream (when dealing with mochas), Hot or iced?, choice of milk. pastry? And finally your name (we don't want to date you, its just protocol). Congrats you did it!
4. oh yea. the condiment bar is to the left of you when you first walk in it has everything you could possibly need. If not we will be glad to assist you.
We love coffee, we love people, we love eachother, we love peet's.
but its just coffee.

I have to review this Peet's in particular, because this location has consistently friendly staff. It's fantastic! Sometimes, I'll stop by just so I can start my day with a friendly exchange in addition to my hazelnut latte. They are speedy, but never mess up on the orders. Even if there's a line, it goes very fast. All other Peet's should follow this one's example. As much as I like my neighborhood location on Broderick and Fell, all the baristas aren't so nice all the time. I like consistency. This place has got just that.

I am a SB slut!
No getting around it!
"Venti Latte, whole milk please."
I don't do all the mirade of other choices that folks stand in line at coffee houses trying to make up their mind about. I just do one thing.
Latte, whole milk.
And, yes, size does matter.
Largest you have.
One of my good friends swears by Peets!
So . . . . to keep her quiet . . . I promised to try them . . . once again.
I went to this new one on the corner of 3rd & Mission.
Yes, it was drinkable. But it didn't give me that "MMMM, OOOOO" feeling that SB VL, whole milk please does.
Not even close.
It wasn't bad, just not great. Three stars is all I can give it.
Extra star for the little sign-up sheet for their email news. I'm trading a few weeks of their advertising for a free drink on Peets.
When I get the drink coupon I will give it to the Peets lover . . . on my way to SB for my regular - -
"VENTI LATTE, WHOLE MILK PLEASE!"

Ahh... Peet's in the morning! I've been coming to this Peet's almost every morning for over a year now and it has saved my life many-a-day.
The morning crew is great. Always cheerful, even when I am reeling from night of debauchery...
The coffee is outstanding...
Seating sucks... on that note, Yerba Buena park is located on the opposite corner, an ideal location to enjoy caffeine and shoot the breeze.
One of the best locations to get coffee in the hood.

When I come to Peet's I get the simple stuff. The simpler the better. It means: coffee beans. They have all kinds of coffee beans to choose from. I buy them and brew good coffee at home. The coffee they make is not bad, although not outstanding either. The holiday soy latte is too sweet, and the green tea soy latte is disgusting. They have no matcha powder, so they'd drop the green tea tea bag inside steamed soy milk...I don't blame them. Most coffee shops don't have matcha powder. With the good selections of coffee beans, Peet's still my man.
Thank you for beating out Starbucks for the coveted title of "The closest coffee shop to my work".
I can now drink my coffee and actually like it.

Dear Peet's,
Thank you for being there for me when I needed you the other morning. Your perfect cup of coffee was just what I needed to prepare me for a day of shopping in the city. Your baristas were friendly and efficient. Your line was non-existent. Your outdoor seating was comfortable as I sipped on my java, inhaling the carcinogens from the car emissions outside and the second-hand smoke next to me.
Sincerely yours,
Anastasia B.

The servers at this Peet's are very friendly and the location is convenient, so I am here pretty regularly.
I'm rounding down though because the space is just too small for a decent drink-in location (if you make the mistake of trying to sit, you'll have someone's butt on your table within about 2 minutes) and they have no bathrooms -- a personal pet peeve of mine.

I usually come here instead of Starbucks around the block if I have 10 minutes to pick up breakfast, or have a long tea break. It's a fairly small shop comparing with other Peet's and people are always getting confused with where the line is. Sometimes the service is so slow that patrons are lining up outside the door!
I never quite understand how people want to sit outside in this busy street, breathing in the carbon monoxide while having a cup of coffee, with the constant traffic as well as the honking of the firetrucks.
But then the coffee is so great that all others imperfections seem minute...
Ah, yes, a real cup of Peet's - officially brewed rather than mail ordered - for this East Coast boy still sufferin' jet lag after a late arrival last night.
Nice brew + nice scone = nice rating.
Me: Large regular ol' coffee please.
Ponytail Patty Behind The Counter: Ok, that'll be $1.75 (or whatevah)
PPBTC: You know. We just ran out of regular coffee. I can give you decaf or half caf? And this. (shoves a stained *yes stained* coupon for a free small coffee at me)
Me: Um.
PPBTC: So? Half caf? Decaf?
Me: Um.
PPBTC: Hello?
Me: But. Coffee shop. Coffee.
PPBTC: Ma'am?
Me: Can I just have my money back?
PPBTC: Um. Nooo...I already shut the drawer.
Me: Um.
So I left with my soggy coupon and half caf.
Maybe I'll take Dave Chappelle for a java.
I just noticed the coupon was for a small.
But I bought a large.
A coffee shop that does not have coffee?
Weird.
Right?

The following is what I like to call a "Compliment Sandwich". (Good feedback, negative feedback, good feedback).
PRO: MUCH better tasting, stronger coffee/espresso drinks than Starbucks.
CON: Where do I line up to order my drink? There's always confusion about where the line begins.
CON: WHY does it take SOOOO much longer to make my latte than over at Starbucks?
- Archaic as it may seem, Starbucks marks off my drink order with a wax pencil/sharpie ON THE CUP, hands it over to the barista, they make it and have it ready for me before I've gotten to the pick up area. And the process works!
- Peet's spent thousands on a IBM flat screen with the exact drink order electronically sent to you from the register 2 feet away. I mean, my order is on a screen RIGHT IN FRONT OF the espresso machine! Shouldn't you be getting my order before I've even paid? What's the hold up?
PRO: They are open later on Saturday evening (til 8pm?) than Starbucks on 3rd & Howard, so I can get my fix before jumping on the 30 or 45 to go into work.
You do get a 4th star for that one time you were closing, but still let me in, and comped me a cup of drip coffee... Thank you!
Ok, I love this place. But here is my attempt to objectively idenitify its challenges first...
1) No restroom.
2) It can get busy and sometimes takes a while to get your drink.
3) Not the most hangout friendly place ever.
Now, the reasons why none of this matters:
1) Beats the bejesus out of a cup of coffee at S.bucks.
1a) Actually, the best coffee/cappuccinos in a mighty large radius.
2) The morning crew rock. Patrice, Sue, Geo: I love you guys, especially when;
3) they see I'm in line and make my drink so that it is ready by the time I pay on really big line days.
4) No one really hangs out here, its just a really great place to go in, grab a drink that is well served, and then go back to work (hands jittering and all) caffinated.
Nice people. Good drinks. More octane of caffeine per ML than any other place for blocks. Good times.

I'm more of a tea person. But I like Peet's and I think its worth it to take a second to note that the staff here is extremely friendly, quick and were very cool to a homeless guy who got on his knees to beg for coffee/money. The guy kept his cool and treated dude with respect, the dude was scary but he dealt with it in a calming way that didn't make me panic. Impressively handled.
-- Update 4/5/07
They moved the coffee fixins stand to the middle, much better!
-- Original Review
While I do enjoy having a Peet's only one block away (as opposed to 2 blocks before) I have some complaints...
1. No one understands how you're supposed to line up. I don't like having to tell caffeine starved people where to stand, that should be your job.
2. The coffee sleeves, milk, sugar, and fixins are all in the back. The back happens to be tiny cove packed with addicts in withdrawal (self-included), so you're constantly pushing your way through a jittery crowd just to get a freakin sleeve for your burning hot crack-drink.
3. There is basically no seating, the place is really too narrow for the tables and having a coffee meeting here stinks.
So with all the bad what's the good? Oh that sweet, sweet, caffeine high...bring it!

Nice kids work here. They serve Peet's coffee. Today after asking me for my name a kid who has only served me once before said, "Of course, I should've remembered that." . Nice one my dude. In went a dolla to the almighty jar.
Also, one day I came in here and there were no fewer than three cute girls behind the counter, all wearing glasses. This phenomena, when joined with my coffee experience is Agent J Kryptonite. I'm surprised I remembered my own name, much less my drink order. The heart stops, it rushes, stops again, repeat, etc. Just today my mocha was made by one such Barrista Scientist. When I order a mocha, it mean "times is tough/hangover". It's not just a maintenence level caffeine dosage, it's all-out Mood Mayhem and I need Coffee, and I need Chocolate. Stat.
The Peet's of my youth was such a cultural oasis that the modern version often seems rightfully more corporate by comparison. But it still smells the same.

The problem with working in the Yelperhood is that the First to Review honor is extremely difficult to nab on new businesses. I like Bob, so kudos to you for getting this one ;)
This new Peet's on the corner of 3rd and Mission is between my walk from Jessie Square Garage to my office, which is more convenient than the one on 2nd & Mission - go figure. Good spot for people watching - sit by the window and you're bound to see someone you know walk by.

Ok, we're getting closer...Keegan now recognizes me...but she can't remember my name...she says every time, damn, Anne is my sister's name, I should remember it! Oh well...she knows my drink now.

I really miss my folks at Peet's in Fremont. But, since I can't take them with me...I had to find a Peet's in the city that works for me. So, in my effort to maintain my fablous figure, I decided that I would begin a different route this month from Bart to office. I walk a bit more to get to the office...good for my health and I get to be one of those walkin' caffeine ads...
The new route has me exit at Montgomery and walk to the Peet's 3rd and Mission location. A bit smaller than my usual in Fremont, you know the burb's, lots of room to s-p-r-a-w-l! It's nice enough, but they know my name in Fremont. They know my drink. How long will it take these Peetsters to get me? I just want them to get me, that's all I ask. They make my drink right, perfect in fact. But they don't know my name. YET.
I may not be first to buy coffee on a Monday morning but I am the First To Review! All hail the new Peet's - opened today.

Great service, Clean enviroment, Not too far from places you can go such as the Metreon, Borders, and etc. I suggest the Jasmine Fancy tea, with a nice book. Aside from all this , 2 workers stand out, A guy named Allan, hes very funny and one of the most interesting workers at Peets, and Mandy , a very cute and chill girl. a 5/5 for Peets! But does anyone ever notice that Peet's hires the BEST people ever? I always keep to myself when shopping or dining (if you can believe it) but I always get into the nicest random conversations with these kids!!

This Peet's on 3rd and Mission is better then every other Peet's, because I used to work there. Yeah, that's right! :P
I'm the little blonde girl who always worked nights. This was before April of 2007.
After dropping off my niece at the Downtown Campus of City College (4th and Mission), my usual coffeehouse (Organic Coffeehouse) was unexpectedly crowded in the morning. Usually it is not crowded at 10 am, but my caffeine craving will have to settle elsewhere.
I refuse to go to any Starbucks for coffee, due to numerous prior incidents (fights, baristas spit in my drinks, fondle myself, indescent exposure...)at other Starbuck's locations in the past. My colleague told me a new Peet's that just opened up recently. It is located at the corner at 3rd and Mission, not far from the Yelp's headquarter.
The coffee was good, bearing in mind that I infrequently go to Peet's for coffee. I buy their bagged coffee beans from a supermarket and make my own coffee from my crib. It wasn't crowded either, with the dining area empty with some vacant tables available to "Hang" and "Chill"!

The staff at this new Peets is so much nicer than the Peets on Mission & 3rd. It's untapped, fresh and clean. Best of all, no line! No pressure when ordering my sugar-free vanilla soy latte. Oh, and they said my name like 5 times... looks like I could be a regular soon!

Great coffee. Very good staff. If I had one concern it is that the rope in the middle of the waiting area seems to be there just for the sake of confusion, such that confusion ensues as to where the line starts, and whether other people are waiting ahead of you to order, or are they just milling about on either side of the rope. The staff do a good job of mediating who's waiting to order, and just holla out for you to step forward to get you taken care of. Couldn't we just lose the rope?
Peet's does a very good job with pastries as well, and when they don't have my preferred pastry, I'll run down the other end of the block and pick one up at Tart to Tart. Peet's beats T2T though because their coffee rocks hard.

I may not be a first review squatter (please see Bob G's review), but I did go to this new Peet's on its first day of business. While I will say it's nice to have this location just a block from our office, there already is one just 2 blocks away.
For anyone who says that Peet's doesn't want to emulate Starbucks, here's some proof of being on every corner.
Four stars because I do like their coffee, but I have to admit they don't do anything for the coffee cafe lifestyle! Where are the co-branded cds, I ask? Although it's been several months since they opened, so glad that Peets opened here. I live here, so there's nothing more special than being able to go downstairs, getting caffeine, and then actually opening your eyes. But the staff here is always great. I get coffee on the way to work every morning and you couldn't ask for anything more...
Wait, I can ask for more. I can ask for the stupid retard customers to actually follow directions and get in the correct side of the line. Idiots.
