hmmmm hmmm hmmm good. by far, the best tasting fried chicken we have ever tasted. we usually order a whole fried chicken and we can eat it in 5 min. max. very tender and juicy. skin= so damn CRISSSPPy.... oh and the gravy... ummm ummm ummm... like a damn orgasm.... it cannot get any better than this...

one tip: do not buy rice here... its nasty... so whenever we want savory we just take it to go....

great customer service as well! the owner is really friendly...

too bad its in a bad location. but still their CHICKEN is out of this world!!

Helllooo... you cannot be filipino if you don't like fried chicken... with gravy and rice even better! Ok to some that might not sound like the best meal ever but don't knock it until you've tried it.

Everytime I go visit my aunties in San Jose I make them go get Savory chicken and they get like 5 whole chickens and rice and all that oh-so-good gravy. The chicken is tender and juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Dip that sucker in the gravy add the rice to your spoon and you get a mouthful of yum! The cousins enjoy every bite every time.

It's best to take the meal and eat in the privacy of your own home so you can unbutton your pants after!

Half a chicken, the #8, with 2 egg rolls and I stripped the chicken down to the bone... I may have even eaten some bone on the wing tip... it was crunchy and it tasted good. Can you tell I have a weakness for anything fried... well, I do. Overall the chicken was juicy and the skin and bone were super crispy.
The little tub of gravy was pretty salty and quickly gelled so you gotta eat it hot.
The egg rolls are good but a little over cooked.
Overall a good lunch  I wanna try their chicken and spaghetti.

I never had filipino food before going to this place.  And, I have to say, it's pretty good stuff!  The fried chicken with gravy is AWESOME!  The gravy is hella good.  I could drink that shit if you gave me a straw.  The chicken is basically the same kind of fried chicken you find in Chinese restaurants.  But, it's the gravy, man!  My mouth is watery just writing this review....slurp, slurp!

They also have a charbroiled chicken which is good too.  A lot healthier, I guess.  And, it comes with a brown soy sauce/ginger sauce.  I just pour sauce all over the chicken and the rice because the sauce is hella good with white rice.

I tried the other stuff on the menu and it all basically sucks.  So, stick with the chicken.  It's damn good!

Savory Chicken.
I've been stubborn in trying this place. Why? Heck if I know! I've only gotten good reviews from friends. Feeling guilty, I finally gave in. I mean, what was the worst that could happen? It was not as good as people said? lol.

So today, I was brave enough to 'just do it'...i just got new jordans too! lol Anyways, omg, I didn't know this was a filipino restaurant! If I had known, I'd have been here sooner. I love some filipino dishes!

So I ordered a whole fried chicken. I was hungry...and yes, i shared it with my friend.

Mmmm....it smelled so good when my order was ready! Even better when I got home and tasted the wing tip. I love the crispy fried skin and edges! I'm definitely going back here again! The gravy is good..but a lil on the salty side. Definitely need rice with it. Taste almost like adobo. Mmmm...i love gravy! :)

They also have party trays with menu items and other popular filipino dishes as well. And of course, they have dessert. YUMMMMM!

P.S. The owner/server was so nice as soon as I stepped in and the whole time I was there! Remember, I'm biased on how I am greeted when I walk in. :)

Juicy fried chicken with crispy skin [HMM!]. But it was bit salty for me but the boyfriend loved it, lol. I didn't care for the gravy so much. I used the sweet and sour sauce that came with my eggrolls.

I think they ran out of fried rice or don't serve it anymore OR fried rice = garlic rice. I don't know, I'm confused. I will find out next time!

Cute small place with really friendly service. We didn't wait that long for our food; about 5 minutes but there weren't a lot of dine in customers, mostly to-go orders. Prices are good for the serving size; half a chicken but only one scoop of rice [eck!]. Next time I will buy a whole chicken [$11] and go home to eat my own fried rice, kek.

Had better chicken before, but will come back to try some desserts, rotisserie chicken [extra $0.50] and the longanisa!

I finally decided to try Savory Chicken to see what the fuss was about and it was only ok.  BUT when I realized that the combo came with fried chicken instead of rotisserie, it was already too late.  The fried chicken was a bit dry but the flavor and crispy skin was good.

Fried rice was pretty decent.  Didn't taste good with the gravy it came with IMO but the 2 others that I came with killed the gravy.

Service wasn't bad but just strange.  The guy was nice but had to ask if I got the fried rice combo some 4 times.

Gave the turon a go and that was good.  Just greasy but i suppose that is expected.  I don't know if the greasiness goes away after it gets a chance to sit but this fried turon came out piping hot. Instead of getting ala mode with mango ice cream (really mango? seems like it would taste better with vanilla), the guy let me order it separately for $1.25 a pop.

Would I come back? Yes, definitely to try their rotisserie chicken ($.50 extra)

I called to order some chicken on a Tuesday before going home from work.  It was a little before 5 when I called in my order.  I asked for fried rice and they said they were out.  OK....Then I asked for the garlic rice and they were out too.  All they had was white rice.  OK...Can't you like make some fried rice with the white rice you got?  I thought that was odd.  You are trying to run a business and it's dinner time.  These items should be available.  Then when I got there to pick up my order before heading home to Fremont.  I asked the guys why don't they have any fried or garlic rice.  He said that they had a rush of customers for lunch and they were busy so and ran out.  I asked what time I should call to get some fried/garlic rice.  He said around 2.  WTF!  I want it for dinner.  After 2 they just stop making fried/garlic rice?  That's stupid!

The chicken turned out good but the gravy was supper salty and my hubby said it had that Chinese after taste to it.  He hates that taste.  I dipped the chicken in some Hot Thai Chili sauce which turned out really yummy with that.  I think it would also be good with Ma Tomas.  I think that's how you spell.  The stuff they dip lechon in I think would be good with it.  I would go back for the chicken but I am still mad about the rice.  They need to get their act together to please their customers.

Despite working nearby and hearing great things about the place for years, I never had the opportunity to try out Savory Chicken.  When I finally did, it didn't disappoint.

Now first off, I would like to say that it's really not a "restaurant".  It's more like a take-out joint.  Yes, there are tables to dine-in.  But, most of the locals go there for take-out or a quick lunch.

As for the menu, there's chicken (charboiled or fried) and other filipino specialties.  I've tried almost everything on the menu and I would recommend sticking to the chicken.  Both styles are excellent.  The charboiled comes with a teriyaki-like dipping sauce.  Whereas, the fried chicken comes with gravy....similar to filipino adobo.  I generally buy a half or whole chicken ala carte and make my own sides for dinner.  The prices for the chicken are pretty good.   Their side dishes that accompany the meal entrees are mediocre.

By the way, I think it's a bit unfair for ppl to judge/rate a restaurant or eatery based on one experience with them that wasn't even food related...but that's just me.  For example, most businesses do not allow you to just enter their establishment and take pictures of their establishment, decor, design, etc.  Now, why anyone would even taking pictures....who knows?  But, there was a review about this topic.

Small establishment. Nice dine in or take out place. Not many tables to sit but quaint. Under a new management. Place has been redone, so it looks a lot better than before. Not tacky looking.

Now about the chicken....Mmmm. Chicken and gravy compliments each other along with the steamed white rice or if you want, they also have fried rice. The chicken was thoroughly cooked to perfection. Crispy and tender from the inside. Beats eating the Jollibee chicken joy and KFC.

Each menu item comes as a combo platter. Rice and chicken, fried rice and chicken or with another side such as eggrolls. If you don't want chicken they also serve BBQ. It's too bad they don't serve filipino breakfast food because they would be pretty busy but I love me some tocino and longaniza!

I really liked it alot.  The chicken I had was charboiled and the sauce ( a sort of teriyaki-ish sauce to dip your chicken in) I had was excellent.  I had a side of garlic rice and the rice was not bad.  It's a great hole in the wall kind of place!

Wow... pretty good...

This is the kinda place that once again restores the faith in the fact that its not about the decor, size, or cost of the food.

went here... a pretty small place with less than 10 tables and seat-yourself kinda place.... ordered up some chicken with some mac salad and a couple buns and was good to go.

I was having a pretty good time with the charbroiled chicken, then I went and tried the sauce and it was even better.

Good sized portions, pretty fast service...  not too crowded at 12:30 on a monday.

I'll be back.

They're chicken may be a tad bit okay, however, the price of a whole meal will over-shadow the taste of the food. WHY? Because this place is a damn rip-off. Please, don't  waste your time and money. I advice you to stay away. Far away.

P.s. To top off their "extravagant" prices, I am proud to say  that their customer service is an absolute  A for ass.

I would say they have a decent number of entrees which all included chicken as part of the entree ... hence savory chicken.

I wasnt to thrilled about the side dishes but the chicken was pretty good. If not for the chicken I would definitely rate this place lower. I had Taho as well and it brought me back to my childhood in PI.

Overall, chicken is pretty good... sides probably needs more work. But you come here for the chicken and they do that pretty well.

I wanted to like this place because of all the hype from friends and fellow Yelpers, but the treatment I got from Tito Boy here pretty much made up my decision to not spend my money at this joint despite the food being so-so and very much home style. He seriously made my first visit here a crappy one.

No one's ever been written in my book as a Class-A jerk-off but this guy received the honor of being the first as a restaurant owner.

First of all Tito Boy, there's no need for you to have your blood pressure shoot up because of me taking a picture of the menu. You said "No camera's allowed" which I wasn't aware of because you lacked the knowledge of posting a sign out. So out of respect for you, I put it away.

Then you come back not just once, but three times to yell at me again and again "I know Mike from Yelp, if you want pictures, you can email him." - SIr I don't care if you knew the George Bush himself, there was absolutely no reason for you to speak to me that way.

If you're freaking out because someone might steal your secret recipe - DON'T. My mom can make the same stuff here, and guess what? It's free!!  (You should adjust your price listing imo, I mean really $2 for a dinky macaroni salad?)

I'm just glad I didn't bother spending any of my dollar bills here because someone else paid for my (not so great) "meal".

So quit trippin' balls, I don't work for the CIA and I'm not on a mission to steal your recipe that probably every Filipino mother knows already.

Gave this place a  try based on the reviews and wasn't impressed. The lumpia was the best part as you can't really go wrong. The won ton soup and garlic fired rice was bland. I know, how can garlic fried rice taste bland??  well, this place achieved it. The chicken tasted "old" & salty so I could only eat just less than half. So on that note, I don't think I'll come back as there are more places to try.

Tiny place off of Milpitas, place was hidden from the public eye though
a busy complex during work hours and weekends.  I have no idea how a place like this survives its longevity. As far as I know, they have been around for almost 10 years or more if that.

Food was ok, I found their chicken a little tasteless and gives so little for the price. The place was semi clean, the owner lady looked irrate
when I asked for the restroom keys, service was quick, savvy....not to
mention gives you 1 tiny container of savory sauce for the chicken. So I had to stop by Lions to buy a bottle of my favorite lechon sauce just to enjoy this "Savory Chicken". I should of just went to Safeway.

3.5 Stars.!!

Take off a star for closing at 8. We got there at 7:50 and they were starting to clean up so I felt bad for ordering my food. But oh well I was hungry. I got number 8 (i think) It came with two egg rolls. We took it to go b/c, well we felt bad they were cleaning up.  We had to drive back to south san jose so I had to hold onto the food for about 25min. I was getting really annoyed with my boyfriend who wouldn't let me pick at my food before we got home. He did however allow me to eat my egg rolls as long as I let him have a bite OR BITES!!!  We ended up eating both of them before we got off the freeway. hahaha. They were good and oily. I didn't even bother with the sauce b/c all i wanted to do was stuff my face.

Then we finally got home. YAY!!! I was HUNGRY... I started off with the wing. I love wings! They are so crispy and the meat was pretty moist. Maybe, I'm just not a white meat lover. But I thought it was a tad bit dry. The chicken does come with gravy so I was dipping pretty much every piece. It made the white meat a lot yummier. The only thing is the gravy was a little salty. Oh well, I just drank lots of water.  Overall the food was very tasty and will probably go back. But hopefully next time we can just eat there so I don't have to salivate in the car.

Good Lord-- I love the fried skin!!!

It's a little similar to how Chinese roasted duck skin is. The chicken was juicy but what probably sets it apart from other chicken joints is the gravy. I saw how large the portions of chicken were so I *wisely* opted to order a #3 which was basically just the 1/2 fried chicken and fried rice, except I subbed for garlic rice. Grand total came to about $7.50.

Service was good... no issues. I came prepared to wait (as per other reviews) but my food took less than 5 mins. I grabbed a menu (for all you other Yelpers) and hurried my ass home. The smell of the chicken was so tantalizing I was THIS close to gorging on it on the drive home... but I restrained myself.

20 minutes later (I got stuck in traffic!), my stomach was in heaven... the crispy skin is probably what makes this chicken so good. I took my first bite of chicken without using any of the condiments so I could really taste it. YUM. Then I tried it with the gravy. YUM. And then finally, I tried it with Jufran (Filipino banana ketchup). YUM. I guess it's good any way you eat it. The garlic rice would've been good if they had used fresher rice, only because I don't like dry or hard rice. It could have a bit more garlic flavor, though.

The combo meal prices ARE on the expensive side... so the next time I come here I'll just order the chicken a la carte and take it home to eat since I could probably make better rice myself. LOL

[Check out the pics I posted. My fat ass was so hungry that I forgot to take a picture of my combo meal BEFORE eating it... which is why the chicken is partially eaten in the picture... hahaha...]

Got the #9 with garlic fried rice instead ($1.50 more for garlic rice, kind of a rip off) and a can of iced tea for $1. The pork lumpia was good and so was the chicken with gravy. The half chicken was huge...I could barely finish a plate. Chicken was very juicy and tasty. Wonton wasn't any good at all and quite small...if I'd get a side, I'd go for something else for sure. Only problems were that it is a little more expensive than other chicken restaurants and it took awhile for us to get our food. Service was good, had a hard time getting directions there though...I was talking to some guy who was probably deaf because I asked him for directions a million times, but never gave the directions to me and ended up giving the phone to someone else. I'd come back.

the chicken is the star at this joint.  the lumpia wasn't so bad also.  the service...sucks.  the guy got angry because he gave us the wrong type of chicken.  you could have your chicken fried or rotiss.  eventually, he switched it out but he was just so quick with the attitude.  for that, 4 stars it is.  unfortunately, the chicken was so dang good that i have to come back.  the skin was perfectly crispy and the sauce that it came with complemented it well.

the place is really small...a hole in the wall.  it gets pretty busy.  try to come during non peak hours...meaning don't come on the weekends, and you should be ok.

Aww, I feel so bad for all the not so great reviews..

I actually like it here! Their chicken is really good.. The skin is like freaking crack. I can eat that shit for days, although some days, their cook must be watching Wowowee or something in the back, because I do admit, the chicken CAN be dry on certain days. BUT THIS IS NOT AN EVERYDAY THING.. It happens!..

As for the rest of their stuff, I haven't had anything but the shanghai lumpia thingamabobbers. Their lumpias aren't huge, but they're pretty good, too.

I do know about a year ago or something, they changed owners. The new guy was always nice to me, and telling me to buy more, haha.. so I can't complain.

the fried chicken isn't coated in batter or flour. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's pressure-cooker fried like Max's Fried Chicken. Only this place is in Milpitas (yay!)  and it's cheaper (double yay!) and dare I say tastier (triple yehey!) I liked the pork lumpia a lot. it tasted almost as good as my lola's. the gravy is fantastic, though I did miss having fried chicken with jufran. one thing you have to try is the quikiam (say kick-yam?) it's like a deep fried meatloaf that's sliced and dippable.

Move over 99 chicken. Savory Chicken is taking over!!! Went here after seeing it YELP'd about. What I like about this place is that they Keep It Simple. Simple and delicious. Not a thousand things on the menu. It's mostly combos with chicken. And yes the chicken is the star. The gravy that comes along side is really tasty too. I know when I really like a place. I start thinking about the next time I will get to visit right when I am leaving. Here, I was thinking about the next time after my first bite. It's not bells and whistles French Laundry dining but "it is what it is". And that is an awesome fried chicken place. Nice people there too.

Based on the Yelp reviews and the proximity of Savory Chicken to my work, I decided to try it.

I give it 3 stars - good, but not outstanding.

Here's why:

The combination platters are 1/2 chicken + your choice of rice (white or fried), eggrolls, pork rolls, pan de sal (little bread rolls), or other sides.

To be safe, I ordered a #2 for $6.50: a real simple 1/2 fried chicken with white rice to go. (Charbroiled chicken is 50 cents extra, but I've been hearing about the fried chicken so that's what I stuck to.) Now, the PICTURE of the combinations will not match what you actually get. The picture of the #2 on the wall had a nice white plate with chicken, white rice, slices of strawberries and garnish. The ACTUAL white styrofoam container had only one scoop of white rice and the chicken. No frills. Just what I kinda expected, but a bit bummed that there was NO gravy or any small side included.

There is a wait. There were only 5 other parties in the restaurant, and I had to wait about 10-15 minutes for my food. So heed the advice and call it in or else you can be hurting for one of their ten or so tables - if they're busy.

I got my order and proceeded to the car to try this acclaimed chicken.

Ever had fried duck at a Chinese restaurant? Well, that's what the chicken reminded me of. Crispy skin, a little fat remaining, oily but slightly dry meat. It was a rather perplexing mix of "Mmmm goodness" and bland taste.

What bothered me even more, I noticed that there was only vinegar, chili paste, and sriracha on the counter. Where was the Jufran/Mafran banana sauce?

So I drove to 99 California Market (or whatever it's called) across the street and bought two bottles of Jufran: Hot Sauce and regular Sauce. I must say that it tasted better with the Hot Sauce.

VERDICT:

There is a flavor to the chicken, but one that reminds me of Chinese crispy duck. If you like crispiness, then this fried chicken is for you.

If you like flavor, skip this place and go to Popeye's and order the spicy chicken.

I would go back to try something else with friends, but I don't see anything special or memorable about Savory Chicken.

ADVICE:

- Bring Cash. No cc's accepted and there's an ATM that'll probably rob you blind on fees.

- No refillable drinks here. The only thing refillable is a water cup.

- Check out the refrigerator in the back. You can see if you're happy paying $2 for a small serving of mac or potato salad.

- Place your order over the phone if you know what you're getting ahead of time. It'll save you the wait.

By far my favorite place for fried chicken. They changed owners (months ago) and thank god they didn't change the recipe for the chicken! I'm glad that they offer more choices of food, but I always order the same thing. They only take cash and if you're in a hurry, call in ahead of time to order. Its a small little restaurant, but the food is great.

The only thing that you need to order here is fried chicken, steamed rice, and gravy. That's it. Everything else is not so great and a waste of money. Don't get me wrong, I love this place but the simple truth is that they soley depend on the crack coccaine that they lace on the fried chicken before they fry it. That way they really don't need to make anything else that good because once you have the fried chicken, your hooked for life!

Very good chicken.  The skin was nice and crispy without any breading.  Just the natural crunch of the chicken skin and almost all the fat are rendered out too!  The meat was surprisingly moist but it was a little lacking in flavor...  Probably because the skin was so good that I ate all the skin before I got to the meat. =P

The gravy was delicious too!  It was good with the chicken, and even better with the rice.  Some gravy accidentally landed on the rice when I was having the chicken and the combination was phenomenal!!~  Let's just say more "accidents" happened and some how almost all the gravy landed on the rice.  =)

My only complain was that the eggrolls werent any good and the directions I got from google was horrible!  I basically had to drive around all the shopping plazas around the area before finally finding Savory Chicken.  And it was worth the chicken!

This is what the commercial for this place would be like if they had one on Channel 36 or the TFC (The Filipino Channel)

Kid:  "Mommy, what's that tasty fried chicken with the skin so crispy, meat so tender, with the taste that lola used to make?"
Mommy:  "Oh, anak that's Sabory Chicken"
Kid:  "Oh, SAVORY chicken"
Mommy:  "Correct, anak, saBOREE CHEEKEN"

Start cheesy melodramatic commercial music.
End commercial.

The place ain't too bad, but it's definitely not a Max's.  Filipino-style fried chicken is made without breading and is boiled first to make the chicken tender, and then fried to make the skin super crispy and tasty.

It's a -1 star because for the price you should get a bit more.  We wanted the #3 which is a half-fried chicken with fried rice.  We were informed that there was no more fried rice (it was Friday at 6:30 ... they should still have fried rice!) but had garlic fried rice.  The chicken was good, and the garlic fried rice was decent.

I'll definitely come back for that "oh-so-masarap (tasty)" chicken.  But I still like Max's for better ambiance and quality of food.

It looks like a converted Little Caesars (which explains the pizza in the name), so there is pretty limited seating inside.  You might be better off getting it to go.

CASH ONLY

and rice. I love eating fried chicken with rice, too bad i didnt use any banana ketchup!

As many others have said.. the fried chicken is tasty! Crispy skin and juicy insides.. even the white meat.  The Charbroiled Chicken is yumm as well.   This is similar to the fried chicken you'd get at Max's.  Savory fried chicken doesn't give you  that sickening feeling you get when eatting KFC.. or wonder if the chicken is full of some crazy steroids or hormones (don't get me wrong at times KFC can be good.. but how the hell do they get a drumstick or thigh THAT HUGE? c'mon now.. you know there's something unhealthy and inhumane going on there). Anyway - the menu there is simple and easy... order by number. The gravy--however; I can do without.  If there was a gravy battle between Savory or Jollibee... Sorry Savory, Jolibee Gravy would take the belt. It's okay - I like ketchup or hot sauce better anyway.. ;)
Another great thing about this place..... it doesn't have that oily, something-is-frying-again aroma like a typical filipino joint (or house), so you don't leave smelling like it either.  However - on the down side, the few times I've been there.. the steamed rice was cold and not really piping hot fresh... which would be best with some crispy fried chicken.   Also - the portion of the rice really isnt enough for the average person, unless you're tryin to cut carbs then it's all good! ;)

They have remodeled which is a BIG plus and FINALLY removed the pizza part out of their signage.  Chicken was pretty good very crispy- the gravy made it even better!

I'm stuffed with Savory Chicken goodness.  I had the #8 which comes with a half of fried chicken, rice, and two eggrolls.  The chicken is delicious, juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside.  Unlike other fried chicken places, you can actually eat the skin because it's not overloaded with grease.  If you want extra fat, the gravy is there for your consumption, and I definitely consumed that gravy.  So tasty!

We got here at around 12:40pm and were able to get a table.  The place is pretty small with very few tables, so choose your timing appropriately.

I now have a reason to eat fried chicken again. Being tired of all the same old tastes from one restaurant to the next. This place rocks! They now have dropped the pizza part from the sign and it's now what it should be Savory chicken.

Just like the other reviews say the chickens deeply fried to perfection. The skin is so crispy it just melts in your mouth, if that makes any sense. The chicken is very tender it falls off the bone. You have the choice of fried or charbroiled. It comes with a Filipino style gravy if you have it fried, and some tangy teriyaki sauce if you have it charbroiled. Depending what sides you want with it, you can have white rice to fried rice and choices of lumpia to spring rolls and or a cup of wonton soup. Their taho is a must if you are into having some sweets after. I haven't tried their halo halo yet, but I hear it's damn good.

I give this place 4 stars because of the unusal hours they have and the high prices. I guess its for the better or else I would be here everyday and seriously obese.

Overall, when I feel like having something that reminds me of home cookin....I'm here. This place has the best chicken I've had in a while. I'm definately coming back to try some of the other dishes they have on the menu.

Based on all the reviews, I tried the #3: Fried Chicken, Rice and Gravy.   It was just ok in my opinion.

Crispy skin was great, but the meat was more on the dry side though not too bad.

The garlic rice really wasn't garlicy.  I think it was just plain white rice with a touch of garlic powder or something.  I had to cover it with the gravy.

I had high hopes for the gravy.  While I thought it was good, it wasn't great.

Maybe I'd go back, but I think it will be later rather than sooner.

DUDE!  Chicken here is kick ass!  Cooked Philippino style (boiled, then fried), there is no way in goodness gracious that this oil covered piece of wonder is good for you.  But they give you hella chicken for it!  Very hole-in-the-wall type of place, the decor is pretty blah and there's the usual pictures of the food up on the wall.  The halo-halo was actually pretty good...very surprising.  4.5 stars just because the decor bothered me....alot.

Bring on the oil! I love it. Haha the chicken was super dope, I would love to go there again, but this time I might need to split my chicken with someone! The only thing is, its near my dentist's office and for some reason I can hear her voice going "watch what you eat! It might stain your teeth!" but its CHICKEN! listerine, flossing and brushing will do the trick. Haha
